  1. When MSFS first came out, it did such a poor job of recording landings that I just wrote the log book off as useless.

I guess I'm not surprised to hear it isn't recording flight time correctly either.

Personally, I've never really paid much attention to virtual log books in other sims, but it can still be interesting to see your number of landings, different airports, and flight time in each aircraft.  I also know that some people do care about their virtual log books.

A virtual log book isn't a new feature, so I'm surprised that ASOBO hasn't gotten it sorted out by now.

I think John Dow's post is great.  Ultimate realism is to make your own log book entries!

  2. It would be nice to have perfect jetway connections, but I'm guessing it is easier said than done.

Imperfect jetway connections are not a unique issue to LEAS or add-on aircraft.

Here is LEAS Gate 2 with the default A320neo

Personally, I think the issue of the jetway's accordion seal taking a "bite" out of aircraft is more noticeable than the height difference.

You can easily see "bite" in the external view and sometimes in the cockpit or interior views when it extends through the cockpit or cabin walls.

It takes a bit more effort to see the height difference since the default jetways are closed at the end and you also get transparency issues when trying to get the camera into the small space between the plane and the jetway.

I think the animated jetways and GSE add life to the sim, even if they aren't perfect.  I won't complain if someone can get the jetways to interact perfectly with all the various aircraft though!

Could anyone who owns a copy please tell me if the developers have created the proper offset lighting approach into RWY 08?

It looks like the Rwy 08 VASI are aligned with the runway, not offset 13 degrees right per the chart.

MALSF approach lights are aligned with the runway as indicated on the chart and the RLLS is modelled.

All three sets of RLLS lights are modeled where they are indicated on the chart.

  4. Yes, I see the difference in your images.

Your first image looks like what I am seeing in the sim.

In your second (larger) image the terrain looks noticeably flattened on the north (hill side) of the runway.

Perhaps something is wrong with the mesh in that image?

I don't have extra add-on mesh or scenery for LPMA in my screenshots.  I just installed LPMA from Orbx Central, started MSFS, and took those screenshots.

I do see a bit of a dip in the taxiway at the north end, just before it curves up to the runway.  Never been there IRL so I don't know how correct that is, but the airport looks nice to me.

  5. I'm just a beta tester and have no specific information about update timelines or the staff's work schedules.

Given that this is the "General Discussion" forum, I would encourage patience.

Based on my observations over the years, updates to third-party products are often first released on their developer's own web site before eventually being provided to the other sellers.  This encourages people to buy directly from the developer, who makes more money by not having to pay a commission to a seller.  The length of this delay can vary based on the developer and the agreements they have with the markets selling their products.

Once Orbx gets updates from the developer, there is some additional delay since they need to get them uploaded to Orbx Central and tested to make sure they are both installing and working as intended before going live to the customers' accounts.

I'm pretty sure that Nick is still working for Orbx, though I have no idea what his schedule and days off are.

I imagine that Orbx has a system for prioritizing issues in their forums.

Given that this post is in the "General Discussion" forum and is about a pending update to third party product, I wouldn't be too concerned that you don't have a direct answer from the staff after 29 hours.  The staff may just be trying to help people with more serious issues posted in the support forums or it might also be the case that someone has already reached out to Aerosoft and is waiting for a response from them.

Sorry I haven't answered your original question, again I'm just a tester who saw your post and wanted to offer my insight on why you didn't have an official reply from the Orbx staff yet.  I have the Twotter purchased through Orbx Central too, so I look forward to the update too.  I'm sure it won't be too long.

  6. I can't speak for Orbx or the developer, but from what I've seen over the years, most flight sim scenery (not just Orbx's) tends to be a "snapshot in time".

Scenery updates tend to address bugs, make improvements, or add compatibility with something.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of an airport update that has included a whole new terminal or taxiway layout.  It might have happened, I just can't think of any!

I can imagine that changing something that wasn't broken could also be a touchy subject.

For every person saying, "Yay!  They added the new terminal!" , there would be one saying, " Hey, I liked the original version!  That was how it looked back when I flew there IRL."  or "When I bought the airport, the store screenshots showed "X" and now you have changed it to "Y"!"

Heck, I'm conflicted in my own desires.  I generally like airports to reflect reality, but there are also airports that I would prefer like they were when I flew from them IRL.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a feature like Google Earth's timeline, where you could set the date and you would get the accurate scenery on that date?

How cool would it be to dial back an airport like Biggin Hill through the decades or see the London cityscape change?

    Get to work devs!!  :D

Edit:  Having said all that, it looks like Marcus Nyberg is currently working on an update for ESGG which includes changes for a new terminal and new hotel.  So it can happen!

Also I can't find any email or form to contact their support, only links to this forum.

For official Orbx support, there is a link to submit a trouble ticket in the Public section of this forum.

There is also the Orbx Support page.

There is a link to it at the bottom of the OrbxDirect home page, or just go there directly.

     https://orbxdirect.com/support

It has links to the Help Center, Support Ticket, direct email address, and to the forum.

Hopefully someone on the support staff can help you with a solution for turning off the static aircraft.

I agree that it would be nice if the MSFS Marketplace was clear about some of the pros and cons of purchasing through the marketplace versus buying from outside the marketplace.  Since Microsoft/Asobo is making money from sales on their marketplace, they may not be too eager to spell out the cons of purchasing from them, compared to purchasing from outside the marketplace.

    Edit:

I don't mean to imply than the general pros & cons of using the MSFS Marketplace are significantly different than those of other marketplaces.

The convenience and simplicity of having add-ons/DLC in one place typically comes at the cost of slower updates and perhaps an occasional reduction in functionality from third party products, whether it is the MSFS Marketplace, Steam, or even Orbx Central.

It is inherently more difficult for markets to manage products from multiple developers, than for an individual developer to manage their own product.

For instance, if Aerosoft creates an update for a product, they can release it on their own site the moment it is ready.  The other markets that sell that same product need to wait for Aerosoft to provide the update to them and then they need to add it to their market sites and ensure the update will work before releasing it to their customers.  Hence the "slower" release time.

Concerning differences in functionality, many Orbx sceneries have configuration options, like enabling/disabling static aircraft, which I don't think that MSFS or its internal Marketplace can currently do.

Orbx Central makes changes to the scenery files before you start the sim.  When you start the sim, MSFS just loads up whatever is currently in the scenery folders.  I don't think MSFS (or the Marketplace) currently has the ability to make any scenery file changes once the sim is running.

  8. My phone's news feed just had an article from FSELETE saying that FSA Flight Simulation Association is hosting a livestream interview with Orbx and Laminar Research.  I don't know if they will talk about a roadmap or not and I don't really know anything about FSELETE or FSA, but the article said the following:

“X-Plane creator Austin Meyer will be joined by Orbx CEO Anna Cicognani and Sante Sottile, Orbx’s Community Manager. The 90-minute interview will cover the latest X-Plane 12 news and find out more about what it takes to develop scenery and aircraft add-ons in the popular and versatile X-Plane platform.”

The live interview will take place on July 16th 2022 at 21:00 UTC and will see the group discussing what the future holds for the next generation of X-Plane. As you will have seen from our extensive Dev Deep Dive series, there’s a lot to unpack about X-Plane 12.

I'm just a beta tester and the only info about future plans that I know about is in this thread started by the Orbx CEO.

  9. I don't know anything about future plans, but Orbx's TrueEarth scenery sure does make a huge improvement to XP11 and I too would like to see ID, UT, & CO get the TrueEarth treatment.

I don't see any TrueEarth products for XP11 listed in the "What we are working on - 2022" posted back in February.  (Just YBBN and KBUR for XP11.)

There are six months left in 2022, but there are also quite a few of the listed products still pending.

    XP11:   YBBN and KBUR

MSFS: YMML, YBCG, YMLT, NZNV, LIPB, LIPH, ENGM, unnamed aircraft.

P3D:  KPBI, OpenLC Asia, TE Eastern Alps

(Hope I didn't miss any announced products.)

I would be a bit surprised to see an unannounced TE scenery area get released.  They are a lot of work and can take a lot of time to test, so I would assume they would be part of the master plan.  An extra airport from one of the indie developers wouldn't surprise me as much, but they are still a lot of work too.

Again, no insider info here, I'm just looking at the named "working on" products, the pace of the releases so far, and the time left in 2022.

I am also curious about what will happen to the pace of XP11 scenery development with XP12 in the works.  (I haven't been following the progress on XP12.)

Whenever there is a major change to a sim, especially one that requires paying for the new version, you can't tell what is going to happen.

Will old scenery work in the new sim?  If yes, customers can keep buying scenery, but if no, some may stop buying until the new sim is released.

How many people will make the switch to the new version?  If lots of users stick with the old version, there could be demand for the old scenery for some time.

If everyone quickly switches to the new version, and if it is incompatible with the old, demand for the old scenery could dry up quickly.

I'm sure the developers would love to know what we crazy customers are going to do! :)

The sim then offers you a DEFAULT set of bindings to the sim for the DEFAULT aircraft chosen

Unless I'm missing something, there is one set of "Default" bindings, period.  Each default aircraft does not get its own set of "default" bindings.

This is not a case of people complaining to Asobo about control bindings for third party aircraft.  It applies to their own default aircraft as well.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I fly the default A320 vs the default C172, I'd like to have different bindings for some of my limited number of controller buttons.

It isn't the end of the world to have to go the controller menu and individually select your saved bindings for each controller whenever you change aircraft.  It is just inconvenient.  Just like needing to reselect my favorite aircraft liveries and weight & balance/fuel load when I load a flight.  Not the end of the world, but it sure would be nice to be able to save your favorite configurations for each aircraft and have them load automatically.

DCS has had separate key binding automatically applied to different aircraft for over a decade.  Frankly, Asobo should have included this ability from the start IMHO.

  11. I'd like to see Cairo airport get developed.

For VFR flyers, it would be a nice place to start from to look at the pyramids.

For those that like longer flights, it would be a good stop between some of the Orbx European airports and their Dubai scenery.

I wonder how difficult it would be for a developer to get good access to the airport to get all the photos needed to develop the scenery?

Is openLc North America a scenario that covers the whole of America? What's the difference with True Earth?

Yes, openLC North America covers North America.

BradB is correct that both openLC and TrueEarth products can be installed at the same time and TE will automatically take priority.

    Just FYI,

FSX and P3D scenery is made up of separate layers that stack on top of each other to make the complete scenery that you see.

The Global openLC User Guide has a good explanation with images.

(You can access it from the product page on OrbxDirect.)

Global openLC is replacing the default Landclass layer.

    image.thumb.jpeg.4fbb355da1a51a268be7d09b7da630b8.jpeg

TrueEarth products use photoreal imagery instead of a LC map and painted textures.  They also include distinct textures and autogen for their coverage areas.

not sure what this is on the roof? it flashes green then white?

The flashing green and white light is an airport beacon.

Looking at the airfield diagram for EICK, it looks like the actual position of the beacon should be on top the control tower, not on the terminal.

The star indicates the location and "ABN FL W/G" means Airport Beacon, Flashing, White/Green.

    image.thumb.jpeg.a367df9bed981e8ffb20e72c2b2a6d10.jpeg

FYI, military airfields have a green / double white beacon.  (This is MSFS default RAF Lakenheath.)
