Hi BPL you can earn Orbs by other means then buying addons.

Santa run is most likely a mission and as you fly it there will be things to fly thourgh and each one gives you 1 Orb. Their is a Halloween run and a Easter Egg hunt too. I never tried them but I think its a nice touch from Orbx and you can get a few Orbs, although the Orbs aren't worth what they use to be

If you sign up to Volanta you also can accumulate Orbs some how too. Again I havent tried it but Volanat has a few features that are interesting to me.

Thanks, seby.h. Perhaps that is the case. I haven't tried these either. The wording in the email led me to believe that simply downloading the Santa Run freeware was all that was required to earn the 10 Orbs, but maybe I misunderstood.

  2. I agree with many of the above sentiments.

In addition, an email was sent out a few days ago saying that one could earn 10 Orbs by downloading the Santa Run freeware. The email states, "Earn Orbs when you download the Santa Run!" and "Start flying and earn 10 Orbs." I took that to mean that I could earn 10 Orbs by simply downloading the freeware. I did so, but have not received any Orbs. Perhaps one must do something more than simply downloading the Santa Run in order to earn the Orbs, but if so, that doesn't seem very clear. Perhaps I have misunderstood. Could we have some clarification on that, @Nick Cooper?

  3. Very sad news. I corresponded with Neil on a number of occasions via the forums and email regarding FTX Global freeware airports and his "misfit" airports project. As others have said, he was a true gentleman who was passionate and prolific in his work. Among his many superb FTX Global freeware creations was a detailed, outstanding rendition of my local airport KBUY (a project he very kindly took on at my request), as well as other airports in my area. He also fixed a large number of "misfit" airports that I pointed out in his misfit airports thread. The work he did on these airports was excellent; he was meticulous (and fast!) in recreating the airports in accordance with their real-world counterparts and in ensuring the accuracy of his work.

Neil told me this once in an email: "I use the doing of these airports as something to keep me busy, and add (hopefully) to the enjoyment of others.  I'm 77 yrs old and NEED something to keep me busy and mind occupied." Neil certainly has added to my enjoyment and the enjoyment of countless others and left a great legacy in the massive body of airports he created for Orbx, and most of us here know little of his life beyond just this one small corner. I am glad to have had the opportunity to correspond with him and am very grateful for the work he did. Neil will be missed by many. My condolences to his family, friends, and the Orbx team.

Hello Neil, I recently moved from California to North Carolina so I would really appreciate a new home airport at "KHKY" Hickory Regional. Thanks.

Welcome to North Carolina! :) I hope you like it here! KHKY would be a nice addition to the freeware airport pack.

North Carolina is a nice place. There should be an Orbx regeon there. But I would like to put in a request. KCLT Charrolate-douglass International Airport for a Global Freeware. It would also be nice to have 14A Lake Norman airpark. As well as 3A4 Southeast Greensburo airport. Thatnks for doing Piedmont Triad! I was going to request it but I went to check and it was already there!

    Thanks very much.

I'm biased since it's my home state, but North Carolina is indeed a nice place that would make an excellent Orbx region. North Carolina has the highest mountains in the Eastern United States; the Piedmont region with its many cities, towns, hills, forests, and fields; the flat farmland of the Inner Coastal Plain; and a varied coastline with beaches, sounds, and the Outer Banks, where the Wright brothers made their first powered flight. With such beautiful and varied scenery and an important place in aviation history, I think North Carolina would be a great candidate for an Orbx region. (Imagine a North Carolina TrueEarth region! :o:wub: ) I'd also love to see Orbx regions covering Virginia and New England and...well...the entire East Coast! :D

  5. Here's a list of the misfit airports I found in North Carolina. (Some of the issues are more minor than others, and I'm not sure if all of them count as misfits. Some might also be remedied with the Vector AEC tool; I would have to test that to see.) Some of the airports now have new names or ICAO codes in the real world, but I've listed them as they are listed in FSX.

A Vector update added realistically drawn beaches to the North Carolina coast after these freeware airports were released, and now the airport background textures no longer mesh properly with the beaches. I'm not sure if this thread is the right place for these, but I thought I'd go ahead and point it out.

    Hi all,

I'm working on the list of noted airports from reports starting Oct 2016 to present, I'm about 1/3 complete.

NOTE: Only misfits not yet fixed in some other way will be done, ie:  airports in regions, payware airports , Tongrass Fjords, ones already fixed, etc will be skipped.  If you have questions please let me know.

    Cheers, Neil

Thanks again, Neil, for all your work on the misfit airports and freeware airports! :)

I just checked a large number of airports in North Carolina and found a number of misfit airports. I'll probably post a list of them with screenshot links tonight or tomorrow morning. I hope to do something similar for Virginia (I think I've already found some more misfit airports there) and check some airports in other states, as well.

    KFIT Fitchburg, MA

And last but not least....my home real world airport.....KFFC Peachtree City, GA

Thanks for all the airports you have done already!!!!!!

Great suggestions! Just so you know and can go check it out, 2B3 Parlin Field has been done already. ;)

Ok thanks, Neil, looking forward to it then. What I do not understand though, is that FSXers see it OK when it is messed up in P3D. Like KMCO after patch 1.15. Do P3Ders have to run the migration tool again or something ?

I'm an FSX user, and I see the same problem you do, Dominique. The problem also occurs with a small construction area included in the Global freeware rendition of my local airport, as you can see in this thread: Texture Displaying Incorrectly at KBUY. The issue is caused by OLC NA. I assume, based on the screenshot above, that Spud doesn't have OLC NA installed; thus, his textures display correctly.

Hey Pete, I was sure that this airport has been done before but a quick look on the list convinced me that I was wrong

However, what confused me is that there is an excellent freeware available for W35 that has been designed to blend with FTX Global. So here is the link and let me know what you think :)

Thanks for posting that link! I don't think I've ever seen those freeware airfields before. I'll have to check those out.

  10. If you need a couple more, here are a couple more suggestions:

5NC3 - Gilliam-McConnell - Carthage, NC (An interesting airport with a popular barbecue restaurant.)

    W88 - Air Harbor - Greensboro, NC

Thanks for taking our suggestions and for all your hard work on these airports, Neil!

Very nice, Carolina is among my favorite areas. @BPL

I'm a native North Carolinian, and I love it here. Obviously, I'm probably a little biased, but it's among my favorite areas, too. :) Glad to see other simmers enjoy flying here; maybe one day Carolina will get the full Orbx region treatment! B)

  12. Neil, if you're looking for additional interesting small airports for the pack you're working on, these airports in the mountains of North Carolina might fit the bill:

0A7 - Hendersonville / 8NC9 - W.N.C. Air Museum - Hendersonville, NC (These two airports are adjacent to each other. 0A7 is a paved public airport, while 8NC9 is a grass airstrip that is home to the Western North Carolina Air Museum. They are rather poorly represented in the default scenery.)

    22W - Transylvania County - Brevard, NC (Listed as 3NR3 on AirNav.com.)

24A - Jackson Co - Sylva, NC (This airport is located atop a mountain ridge.)

7A8 - Avery Co - Spruce Pine, NC

    NC14 - Boone Inc - Boone, NC

You may also want to check out these:

    0B1 - Bethel Regl - Bethel, ME

KXSA - Tappahannock-Essex County - Tappahannock, VA (This airport does not exist in FSX. It is a new airport that has replaced W79, which is now closed.)

    W75 - Hummel - Saluda, VA

W91 - Smith Mountain Lake - Moneta, VA

    Much obliged.

Excellent request in a beautiful mountain setting in my home state! A slight correction: the FAA identifier for this airport is 1A5.

  14. Here are a few more I found:

3N5 - Newton - Newton, NJ (This airport is also now closed.)

    http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/image/GTyu

N72 - Warwick Mun - Warwick, NY (It's a little difficult to see in this screenshot, but there are "cliffs" in the water here caused by the airport boundary, as is also the case with 12N above.)

    http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/image/GTy9

    N99 - Brandywine - West Chester, PA

    http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/image/GTyb

    http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/image/GTyf

  15. Wow, you work fast, Neil! I can certainly understand if you need to limit the detail, considering the sheer number of airports that will need to be done.

I just noticed that I made a mistake in my list above. I have on the list "KRHP - Western Carolina Regional Airport - Andrews, NC." That should actually be "1A5 - Macon County Airport - Franklin, NC." Sorry about that. It was late when I was making the list, and I was probably a little tired. ;)

  16. Thank you very much for doing this, Neil! Here (with screenshots) are some airports that I found that may fit into the "misfit" category. The issues with some of these airports are minor (I debated whether to include some of them because of this), while others are more severe.

6A5 - Warf Airport - Reidsville, NC (Not only is this a "misfit" airport, but it is also modeled in a rather bizarre fashion in default FSX when compared with the real airport.)

    http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/image/G6KE

8A6 - Wilgrove Air Park - Charlotte, NC (This airport may not technically fit into the "misfit" category; the issue with it isn't immediately obvious. The problem shown in the screenshot below is that the airport is located south of the roads and railroad cutting through the airport clearing. In real life, the airport is located to the north of these roads and railroad.)

  17. Thanks for including KGSO in Pack 19 along with some other North Carolina airports recently! :)

Speaking of which, I'd like to be a nuisance and repeat my request for Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport (KBUY), since I forgot to mention in my initial request another good reason for including it in an airport pack: The runway has been lengthened from 4999 feet to 6405 feet. Seeing KBUY in a freeware airport pack would be the highlight of my flight simulation year. 8)
