Another topic on scenery... A multitude of questions

After abandoning plans for my local airport for the time being since:

A- I don't own FTX Global

B- I'd rather make something in the PNW region people may actually be interested in.

That airport is a certain regional airport mentioned in a thread earlier this week - I'll give you that.

I don't really want to make something that'd be too generic, I'd like to really make something of quality that I'd feel proud enough to post here in the freeware section of the forums and feel I am capable to do so, just lacking in knowledge of scenery design. I've posted quite a lot of threads on the subject here and would like to do something with scenery design instead bugging you all with more question!

I don't think this needs too much bigger of an explanation. So here it goes...

How do you create seasonal variations? What I mean is this - I have some models made, now when I texture them, how do I make Flightsim have a winter version of a house? Or a fall version?  How do I make a ground-poly match a season as well - If I have a ground poly for one season, how do I make one for another season?

Is there any way to place object other than Instant Scenery? I'd like to get it, but I'll be buying ORBX airports before I buy Instant Scenery.

So I have Photoshop and all, but how do I design textures? I'm guessing it's one of two ways:

1. I take a wooden board texture like this:

And adapt it into something like this, courtesy of Misha ;D :

Basically, taking a generic wooden texture and editing it in different ways to create the masterpiece above.

2. Drawing things out by hand, to be frank.

Final question, how do you create vegetation like in the photo above? Even simple 3D grass, how is that done?

Thanks.. Hopefully I can start on my project soon!

Mac

Thats actually one of the first things you need to learn: 'Searching for what you need",

As a developer you'll spend a lot of your time doing that, as nothing is really put on a plate, I think most developers have A-type personalities ;D

A good place to start is http://windowlight.co.nz/store/index.php?main_page=page&id=5&chapter=1&zenid=5c3c5b45458d5026af35477f7acab495 and if you prefer a video style guide then utube is your friend http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=FSX%20gmax%20tutorial&sm=3

And the main modeling section at fsdev http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/categories/scenery-design-3d-objects.26/

A list of tools you'll need http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/73146-how-to-become-a-freeware-airport-developper/?p=672162 (which you'll also want to become familiar with)

Its not an easy thing to do, and most who try it simply give up.

Can I install the FSX SDK without an FSX installation? My computer isn't finished yet, and I currently do not have my main FSX computer. Is it possible to just download the SDK off one of the disks?

EDIT: Installed the SDK however when going to the following URL for an activation key, the page is a black grey colour; I am unable to find any key.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post that link or not, if not, please admins do remove it.

Actually, whilst much of the stuff is already in the wiki at www.fsdeveloper.com, this thread is just the sort of thing to discuss over there.

Unfortunately what you have asked poses a large slab of scenery design.

One thing I will say, however, FSX does not support custom seasonal textures for 3D objects out of the box. That was one of the reasons objectflow was developed.

So long since I installed gMax or the SDK I am not sure I can answer your question!

From memory though, the FSX SDK does grab core files for a few things. Also you should have FSX SP2 for testing.
