".......A shortage of experienced pilots contributed to the hard landing of a Qantas plane at Darwin Airport in February, an interim report has found.

The QantasLink 717 jet - flying from Cairns - was carrying 88 passengers and six crew when it landed heavily on the main runway, seriously damaging the plane's fuselage and landing gear.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has found the co-pilot used auto-throttle to land and did not attempt to override it manually when the plane suddenly dropped altitude.

The report says an investigation by the operator of the plane, National Jet Systems, found the current shortage of experienced flight crew meant employing less-experienced pilots.

The ATSB report says other factors included the co-pilot's lack of familiarity with Darwin Airport and the lack of lighting along the centre of the runway.

The Defence Department, which technically owns the runway, says it will consider upgrading the lighting.

But the ATSB's Julian Walsh says it's not the first time the issue's been raised.

"The report details the fact that we've raised a concern in the past about the lack of centreline lighting at Darwin airport, that was an issue that was raised after a previous incident in Darwin some years ago," he said....."
