As far as I could tell so far, there is no archiving of previous metars, so you will only ever get the current metar for any particular station. Thinking of it in terms of cost, maintaining a server that picks up a single dataset (albeit large) is going to be cheaper than having a subsystem archiving every dataset for those wishing to use archived weather.
