Jay Kae
With immediate effect, the forums will automatically block links to *you*tube* due to a ruling that forces google (the owner of the video portal) to reveal user data to third parties. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7488009.stm Of course other sites have to reveal their user data as well, but the content on the YT website is very doubtful in many cases (in terms of copyright) and having our forums link (directly or indirectly) to such a content might cause problems for us. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.

gwolb
My two cents: if you want to view YouTubes videos, you should be able to be allowed, blocking them all on the site just because of this legal case seems to be a bit of a over reaction. Any way, this is some of the info from YouTubes site. Also, does YouTubes get any more info than any other site, that may or may not make their users data available to third party vendors? From Youtubes site: The Law and Your Privacy As you may have seen in the news, YouTubes received a court order to produce viewing data from our database, including usernames and IP addresses. In order to protect our community's privacy, we strongly opposed this motion when Viacom and others filed it. The court felt differently and ordered us to produce the data. Viacom said that they need general viewing information to determine the proportion of views on YouTubes of copyright infringing content vs. non-infringing content. Of course, we have to follow legal process. But since IP addresses and usernames aren't necessary to determine general viewing practices, our lawyers have asked their lawyers to let us remove that information before we hand over the data they're seeking. (You should know, IP addresses identify a computer, not the person using it. It's not possible to determine your identity solely based on your IP address. Rather, an IP address can reveal what geographic area you're connecting from, or which Internet service provider you're using.) Why do we keep this information in the first place? It helps us personalize the YouTubes experience, getting you closer to the videos you most want to watch. We have many features on the site that help users discover and share compelling content, and we're improving the video experience through recommendations, related videos, and personalized directories that help you find meaningful videos. We'll continue to fight for your right to share and broadcast your work. The court did impose some encouraging limits -- they agreed with us that Viacom should not have access to private videos or our search technology. Also, the information we provide will be designated highly confidential under court order and only Viacom's outside counsel and experts will have access to it. Legal matters aside, our focus remains on providing you with the best possible YouTubes experience and we continue to be committed to protecting your privacy. Every day, millions of creative people from around the world are posting new, original content. You, our community, are creating the YouTubes experience now and tomorrow. Sincerely, The YouTubes Team

Guest Aussieman
gwolb, you seem to be missing one point. Google has been ordered by the court to hand over all logs from You tube. These logs have a record of your username and IP address. To me with Google having to hand over these logs my privacy has been compromised. If you are happy to have your privacy compromised then so be it. Cheers Pat
Jay Kae
First and foremost your privacy is #1 here at Orbx and that is all that counts Alternatives: http://vimeo.com and http://simtube.com
gwolb
Yes, I do under stand it, was just trying to point out that it seems like a over reaction, and almost any site records your ip address and user name(if you have to setup on). I dont even have a user name on that site, so they are not getting that info from me. And even this site records your ip address on every post. rjbrown7
Because its the most widely watched video sharing site I can understand the dissappointment but seriously You Tube quality is so bad who cares!! If you want to watch stupid home videos or Pet tricks or drunk Stars making fools of themselves You Tube is the place but to see FSX, FTX, REX, etc and to see the detail of these fine products why even bother with You Tube. Vimeo seems to be catching on here but its Flash HD is so processor intensive I can't enjoy it on HD. There are some DIVX sites that are filling the void of Stage 6 the best one I have found so far is Vreel ( http://beta.vreel.net/index.html ) it is a DIVX site that seems to be fairly responsible about copyright issues and doesn't all porn. my 2 cents roy
gwolb
yea, its not a big deal, and like Jay was pointing out, plenty of other sites out there, with much better quality.
skypilot
Once they have that information, what are they going to do with it? Will they be prosecuting people for using u-toob?
mknorr
Yes, we could be in violation of international copyright by posting links to You*Tube How? Viacom wants to know the ratio of viewing of copyright infringing content to other content. How is posting a link here to a new video you made infringing copyright?
gwolb
I don't think Viacom is stupid enough to release the user names/ip address info for hundreds of millions of peoples info, and this is if you even have a user name on their system. And if they did Google/You*tube would sue them so fast it would make their head spin. Also need to remember that they have not even decided if they are going to take this to trial, still in the discovery stages of the case. Besides, there are much better sites to see copyrighted tv/movies online, like: Surfthecannel, Hulu, etc... even in HD! Only reason they are going after Google is they have the deep pockets for big money payout.
