Dodgy Computer Company - Flight Simmers beware

I recently upgraded to a new computer. The company I chose was based on the review by PC Authority that this was a great company for gaming computers.  Sadly this was not the case.

Anyway, I jumped on the website,  pushed all the buttons for the options, but could not get a printout, but by pure accident, discovered that one button had not been recognised.  This was only discovered when I emailed the Company over an issue and it was only then I was told the overclocking button had not registered.  The Company then confirmed the next day that they would overclock it for free.  Wow I thought.  PC Authority is dead right about this Company.

The next day I even received an email from the technician about the setup and that it was a well balanced computer.

So my i7 930 overclocked GTX480 Graphics card with an SSD was on its way.

Well it finally arrived in good time,  but started rebooting from the beginning.  This I was told was a software issue and therefore  not covered by warranty.  I also asked about the overclocking and they confirmed it had been done, but I would have to buy a program to determine the level of overclocking,  but advised don’t worry as it was fine.  After trying everything to fix the rebooting,  I went to a local Computer tech and he confirmed it was a hardware issue.  Finally after 4 weeks, the Company finally agreed to repair the computer.

Well it returned,  but no overclocking, and a faulty keyboard connection.  Rang the company and was told that if I got it all set up,  give him (the owner) a ring and he will talk me through the overclocking. I even discovered that the SSD was slowing the computer down and was of low quality but a high price.

Well rang today to get it overclocked.    Can’t do I am now told.  The cooling system I believe I ordered they claim I didn’t.  When I questioned the comments of what the Technician said in the emails, and that I had told it was overclocked,  they became rude, abusive and swore.

Sadly,  my story of this Company is not isolated.  And sadly I found this website (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1003912 ) too late. It lists many others who also have had problems. Sadly I also put trust in what I considered a reputable magazine.

Now I have a choice,  send it back and pay more for an upgraded cooler that I was initially told was fine, and hope they don’t screw up anything else,  or go local and get my local Computer Tech to fix it,  but voiding the Company’s warranty.

So the best I can do is warn others.  Be careful,  search the web for reviews in forums of Companies, and don’t always trust reputable computer magazines.

You won't believe how easy it is to order the finest parts for probably half the cost and plug them together yourself. You'll end up with a much better and much cheaper PC. There are tons of tutorials online and hey, we are willing to help as well.

(f.e. i had my rig including high end water cooling up and running in less than a day - and i am not exactly an expert...)

Im sorry to hear of your woes here mate, I have a great guru that i use i bought all my parts and took the boxes to him he did a full build for me and charged me thirty English pounds for doing this which i find unreally cheap he has been in the buisiness for around twenty five years and knows his chips allright the machine was back at the end of the day. Im sorry to say that there are a lot of cowboys out there willing to take your money and they will promise you the moon but when things go bad their true colours come to the fore, thank you for bringing this up it may stop others from using the same company in the future, I hope you get something sorted out with the machine and Good Luck to you in achieving your goal of a decent machine.

cheers

Iain

While I won't name the Company,  the forum at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1003912 certainly does.  And the comments from other customers shows the very bad trend of this Company.  So have a look at the link and warn your friends about this Company.

As can be seen on the above forum and my experience as well, it seems that the company's tactic is to deny everything even when there is a trail of email evidence which I luckily kept.  Then when you catch them out, they become abusive and hang up.

I would love to be able to build my own computer so I would'nt have to rely on such vultures, but trust me Heiko,  I would break it, I am that bad with electronic things like computers, so I depend on a shop who specialises in gaming computers.

It would be great to have a 'Shame File' sight on this forum for these dodgy gaming computer sellers.  Maybe then it would keep Companies a little more honest if they want to stay in business.  And of course a recommended Company list as well to help us not so savy computer wizzes buy good Flight Sim computers from descent and honest people who deserve our business.

Hi

Sad to hear of your problems.  There is light at the end of the tunnel though, as  Heiko has stated it is a lot easier than you would think to do the upgrades and overclocking yourself. Save yourself some money, and some trouble and go for it.  Most people here that have the experience will give you advice and talk you through how to do things.

This whole deal also brings PC Authority in a bad light. You should write to PC Authority, and ask if they´ve ever done a customer review of those PC hustlers, and how they´d come to the conclusion that this was a great company. They´ve obviously not done their homework, they´re probably just getting paid for exposing the company in a positive manner.

I used to work for a Australian computer company/manufacturer (went bust many, many years ago, in the early 90's). There was a review in a computer mag of the computers being sold by that particular company. The article was written by the Canberra manger and given to the computer magazine and had nothing to do with a journalist personally reviewing the product; it was simply printed as was under the journalists name. So this probably happened with the Mag you suggest and that particular company so I am not surprised that they got a good write-up.

Oh yeah! My first two or three PCs were build by the so called experts and all of them had stability problems (after seeing these guys handle the RAM sticks I wasn't surpised) and one even died on me, because the "expertly" attached cooler fell off and hit the graphics card while the CPU fried and took the mainboard with it. Ever since I build my PCs myself I don't have any problems whatsoever. *knocks on wood*

Been building my own PC's since I got my first DX4 100. NEver had a problem with hardware *touch wood* , overclocking etc. I reccommend taking the time to learn how to build your own PC. It is easy enough and as long as you take care, think about what you are doing you will be fine. You also get the level of satisfaction when you turn it on .. it posts, loads your OS and you are away :D

Cheers

Unfortunately hard won advice. Thanks for the "heads up". It will be added to my list.

I too got bitten by a character who vanished with my money half way through the computer build. I know it is beyond the scope of this forum to name and shame but perhaps there is room to create a list of those who members have been happy with. As an example I am still looking for someone in the Perth area to overclock my machine it would be great if I could find a contact through this forum.

Thans everyone,

I have decided to do it myself with a freinds assistance who  by pure chance, I discovered is a computer wiz.  There is no way I will sending my computer back to NIRV who have screwed up twice, don't answer emails and when I ring them are just rude and deny emails.  So by the sounds of it,  DELL and NIRV are two companies for flight simmers to avoid despite having great looking websites and make lots of promises.
