Am I making the right choice?

I don't want to spend a lot of money on a new PC but do want something to run fsx like I dream.

I have ruled out 980x and the new 970 the cost is silly for what you get over a oc i7.

This is as close to what I think is right.

I cannot get them to change the mobo to a Asus extreme III, but it is a SATA III 6gb mobo

They will change the HD to a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache

This is for only FSX,

Also I will get them to add a Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive as this has a very high read speed. Should i get this for the SSD? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CC-004-SR&tool=3

I really would like your feed back if this is a good choice.

EDIT: after reading Alan's reply about SATA III I am so confused :'( http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=25729.0

Nyxx, here is the thing....what you have to ask yourself is how much money you can spend on your rig and after that you'll be able to chose the best solution according to the $$ you are welling to spend on it.

Today's hardware is so confusing because everything change so fast... the sky is the limit.... but at one point you (we) have to ask ourself "Where do we stop"... you can spend $15,000.00 just on a PCIe SSD card... look at this one here...  http://www.fusionio.com/products/iodriveduo/  is this one better than the one I have "you betcha"......but I'm not taking a secong mortgage on my house to built my FSX rig.

We have to choose between bragging right and effectiveness, I could have got the Asus Rampage III as the new mobo for my update (The Asus Rampage III is a great mobo) but I choosed the Asus P6X58D because this board can do the same as the Rampage III.... for FSX ....for less money and I was not "gonna" buy 2200MHz memory to put in the Rampage III http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231334 because the timing is not tight enough (FSX love fast memory WITH tight timing) so to me if you are buying a board who can take 2200MHz memory it's because you will put 2200MHz memory (this is only my personal opinion about motherboard and memory).

To me the bottom line is this.....define how much money you can spend on upgrade and buy the best accordingly.

They don't say what is the timing on your rams, they only stated "low latency" is it what's installed in this rig? If not ask for it, that's the lowest timing Corsair make in the XMS3 line  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145242&cm_re=Corsair_XMS3_6GB-_-20-145-242-_-Product

You should buy one HDD or SSD just for FSX, the best bang for the buck is this one as far as HDD...  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136555

As far as SSD I think this is a good choice....  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231378

Stephen is using one so you can ask him what he think about it. As Jack said you may want to go with a more powerfull PSU also.

It all depend on how much GB you'll need. The rest of the rig should be OK for the money since you have it built.

Seems like a nice rig. Here´s a review on the board. http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/gigabyte_ga_x58a_ud3r/

I´m going for the UD5, that and the UD7 had some cold boot problems, probably done with in the rev. 1.0 versions. The UD 3 also has a rev. 1.0 edition, make sure it´s one of those in that wonderful 902 case!

Hi Nyxx,

I really like the WD 7200rpm 64 cache. It fully loads windows in about 30 seconds when the bios is done it's thing and shuts down in even less time after being defragged with O&O in "complete name" mode. I have FSX on a Gskill 120g SSD which is white hot FAST and smooth. The i7930 is good to go for an OC to 4.3-4.4+ and the Prolimitech CPU cooler is great if your case is very well vented. I have nine fans running (including everything) in my Storm Scout case. You will have fun!

Kind regards,

Hi,

I got this package from Overclockers with the upgrade to the Asus Rampage III and I am very happy with it..

I also added a GTX480 card,a 600gb 10,000 rpm Western Digital Hard drive and an OCZ 60gb SSD for my operating system...I built it using my existing case and it came in cheaper than your system...

I would certainly reccomend self build if you have the confidence to do it...

I would also say to increase your Power supply to a minimum of 750W

@Dave N,

It comes with a "Power Supply: Corsair TX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply"

I have a PC builder that are 5 Min's from my house and they are sooo cheap it's silly, they have build my last 4-5 PC from my spec's, so I've never even tried to build a PC myself and to be frank, don't know how to or have the balls to do it, let alone try to over clock.

If my PC shop did over clocking I would just buy what I need and save money but they will not over clock. This PC shop if you buy the components from them will charge the same as overclockers and only charge £50 for the build and guaranty it for a year.

If someone would to a idiot prof way for me to over clock it myself i would but it would have to be "change that to that" etc, would have no idea at all.

Also the saving is not that great it works out at a saving of £200, but i lose my current PC so keeping my current PC is worth £200 for a fall back PC.
