Total distance: 1172nm Like many Brits, much of what I know about Australia comes from Rolf Harris or the movies (Rolf turned 80 last month - can you believe it?). But broken Hill, I know about mostly from watching reruns of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. And the key thing it teaches us about Broken Hill is: Don't, under any circumstances order a soft drink at the bar. There was an actual broken hill here once (the town is named after it), but since it was made of "ore", it got dug up. We're heading for Tibooburra, right in the top left corner of New South Wales. It's a small desert settlement, with its origins in the gold rush. We'll be heading out North, over the mine, and then off into the outback. The pictures pretty much speak for themselves. The distances: The first number (this trip): It's 156nm from Broken Hill to Tibooburra. The total: It's 1172nm from when I started the trip in Albury. Unfortunately, the basic airports in Oz haven't been improved in the way that the PNW ones have, so sometimes it literally is just a runway in the desert.
