Dwho
Intel's new 32nm 6 Core CPU is going to be called the Intel Core i7 980X Extreme Edition instead of Core i9. More details below... http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20091214171036_Intel_s_Six_Core_Desktop_Chip_to_Retain_Core_i7_Brand_to_Hit_the_Market_Next_Quarter.html
John Venema
That's because the 8-core chips will be the i9's now, methinks.
Ian Routley
Yes .. the marketing people left themselves nowhere to go ... they've run out of digits. They really should have launched the i7 as an i2, then followed up with i1 (instead of the i5) They would have then had 7 digits to play with before they changed architecture. Now they're going to have to add X to the end of everything ..
RallyFan
That's right ... I wonder what Boeing will call their planes once 797 is used up? Anyway, would Fsx with SP2 be able to take advantage of 6 or 8 core chips? Or will it necessitate an SP3? Cheers Jason
Joshua_Stone
That is a very nice CPU, would like one of them, would fly threw FSX easy Abit off topic, but as to what boeing will call there planes in the future will be Boeing Y1, Y2, Y3, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Yellowstone_Project
macca22au
Without FSX being re-written for threading, surely a 6 core would give only a marginal improvement. Isn't it sheer grunt that we need. Like a 3.8gig native clock speed CPU at 4 cores. I accept that the 32nm architecture will help.
