Is Orbx compatibie with FSX-SE and how to install

Recommended Posts

Hi Nick,

Yes, I have FSX Boxed set with all my Orbx products on it in a C: drive.  I recently purchased FSX-SE and I am downloading and installing Orbx products into FSX-SE on my G: drive.  The downloads and installation worked fine except that the oceans are now forests. Note: I have the disc for each product, but they have the old install software that doesn't allow for FSX-SE. Also, Orbx in the Boxed set in fine.

Go to the Freeware page and download the Orbx Registry Fix tool.

Use this to create a registry entry for FSX Steam Edition.

When you have, you should then see a start menu for FTX Central.

Select FSX Steam Edition.

To be honest, trying to run both versions together is a bit of a nightmare.

I have given up because it's too much grief.

Do you have a really good reason for doing this?

Hi Nick,

Success!  Almost, the oceans are back, but there are small black squares along the streets and in towns.  As you suggested I created FSX-SE in FTX, downloaded the scenery library, did the sync and force migration.  Now , how to I deal with the black squares?  We're almost there.

Good news.

The black squares are FTX lighting which is not compatible with the FSX Preview Direct X 10 mode.

There are three choices:

1. Untick the Preview Direct X 10 box in Display Settings and run the simulator in Direct X 9 mode.

2. Continue to use the Preview Direct X 10 mode and download and install the freeware fix to be

found at the Avsim Library, file name shader_release_v3.2.3.zip

3. Continue to use the Preview Direct X 10 mode and purchase the payware Direct X 10 fixer from here

Did you delete your shaders before you tried the freeware fix?

C:\Users\Your name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\FSX and delete the Shaders and

Shaders 10 folders. They will be replaced when you next start the simulator.

Try unticking the Preview Direct X box and see if the black shapes go away.

You are not using Direct X 11 but Direct X 10.

My PC has Direct X 12 installed but FSX is also using Direct X 10 and not 12.

It cannot use Direct X 11 or 12 because it does not recognise them, luckily, both versions

are backwards compatible to Direct X 8.

If you try again with the freeware fix, you will find that if it is properly installed, it will

remove the black shapes.

Be sure to delete the Shaders before you try it again.
