jlindblo
I stopped here in Monument Valley for fuel approx June of 1972. I am trying to pinpoint where that location might be in today's world. Anyone recognize the rock in the background?
ojiito
Oljato is 7 or 8 miles west of the Monument Valley strip (Goulding's), is that what you're asking? It appears to not be open these days. This is from SkyVector (http://skyvector.com/airport/05UT/Oljato-Airport), looks like your rock just right of the far end of the runway.
jlindblo
Thank you Alex ..... that is it exactly!! I kept looking around the Monument Valley Airport and the town as reported by Google just to the east of that. Not there but it is, well, what's left of it, where you say. And yes .... Oljato, Utah is still visible on the rock hill. I appreciate. Jim
ojiito
Excellent. What I wouldn't give to be able to explore the southwest back in the 70s...
jlindblo
Alex, Oh yes .... that was an adventure for me. Dead Reckoning for sure, and at times I flew only a few hundred feet off the ground when I saw something interesting. Yuma to Chicago. At one point I saw some ancient desert ruins and made several circles around to really get a good look. It was a large round structure that had partly fallen down .... perhaps a meeting place with a second story. There were absolutely NO roads going to this place ... no jeep trails, no human pathways ... just sandy, ancient and reddish. I wish I had taken pictures, or landed ... as I often did, but I was too amazed. Oh well .... perhaps in my next life.
