kingfish42
I followed this one through with some success. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2008/11/06/overclocking-intel-core-i7-920/1 another good read with some references http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1232325236 and another http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1231257262 Suggestion..........read through these and you will have a lot of good info. Then follow some of Nick N's references back to the source. I find that his info is great. Kingfish

randy
why not, its stock is only 2.67 now its 3.5 thats a big jump. anyway couldnt find anyone with my specs to help. never mind. Paul Paul, I think I mentioned in another post about trying for the 4.0ghz mark with the 920...that is risky. Yesterday I was reading a post...and I wish I could provide a link but I read so much I don't always bookmark the read.....somewhere that Intel knows that some of the 920's will not even go to 3.8ghz and be stable. I don't have your M/B and can't help you with the clock...but if you will do some searching you will find some of these reads about the 920 being the luck of the draw as to the level of clocking. I don't think you will find anyone here who will walk you through a clock. You are going to have to find an article or forum about your particular M/B and clock it and then after doing so I am sure if you ask a particular question about an issue someone will respond. Virtualwombat
Here's a link to the EVGA forum that gives a pictorial recipe for overclocking the 920 to a minimum 4.2 GHz and a maximum of 4.5 GHz in air: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=642527 Obviously the options available in the EVGA MoBo bios may not be the same as yours, but it could still be useful as a reference. I found the increase in voltage that is required to attain a stable over-clock chewed through my cooling headroom, so although I could run 4.2 GHz no problems (i.e. boots, runs apps, etc), the CPU temps were higher than I would like for extended use (the Intel spec is 67°C from memory, and I was getting close to that under load). So I contented myself with 3.2 GHz with no over-voltage. At this level, temps are the same as stock clock rates and performance notably improved. Cheers, Noel. Virtualwombat
Here's a very clear video on the same Core i7 920/EVGA MoBo system: http://hothardware.com/Articles/Intel-Core-i7-Overclocking--A-HotHardware-HowTo/ Cheers, Noel.
Griff
Thanks for posting that link Noel. My friend just built an i7 rig based on the 965 extreme chip with the eVGA X58 SLI motherboard and I have been trying to learn all the settings and what not to answer his questions. That video certainly helped with the explanation of various settings in the BIOS. I hope to build a similar system in the not too distant future so that I can enjoy a new level of FSX..........
