Formation flying saves fuel as it is more efficient. In North America birds fly south for the winter, they fly in formation to save energy. Airlines are studying this now as well. Millitary has been doing this since world war 1 so the concept is nothing new. Just need to reprogram the autopilot to follow a lead aircraft and this would work. The seperation is a couple on miles for fuel savings so they won't be that close anyways.
