I was leary about using liquid cooled for my first build but this Corsair unit is plug in play - prefilled, sealed, no maintenance. Will the Corsair unit give me better cooling than the Noctua - can anyone with either unit give their thoughts? The Corsair is actually cheaper right now but I'll go for whatever is best.

I have a Corsair H50 running with 2 Cooler Master Blade Master 120 Fans in a Push Pull setup and @ 100% Load on my 4.2Ghz i7 930 my CPU temps dont pass 70°C and it idles around the 32°C mark with a room temp of 23°C

Yes i have a Corsair H70 installed and very good it is as well also frees up a lot of space in the case to get air moving aroud, But saying that the NH D14 Is a demon they reakon the King of all air coolers and if you put another fan on the front so you have three fans on this unit it should beat the Corsair for cooling but will take up more space in your case alain would tell you more about this i think he has this set up. Price wise i dont think there is a lot in it as i have never had one of these coolers i cant really say anything more about it but there is plenty of wright ups on this one.

cheers

I just installed the Corsair H70 two days ago and it was really simple and clean. I have an i5 750 OC'd to 4Ghz and it idles at 39C and peaks at 79C under load. I highly recommend this cooler because it get's the hot air out of your case unlike an air cooler. With the dual fans there is all sorts of heat blowing out the back from the radiator and I am glad that's where it is going. This puts less stress on the Video card as well because it's only surrounded by cool air coming into the case. Because it's a sealed unit you don't even have to mess with filling it up with fluid. The pump that is in the CPU block really seems to move a lot of water. If you listen closely you can hear the water moving around the circuit.

Again, highly recommended.  :D

I asked Alain this same question he posted some links with test that showed the air cooled system performed better its over on the rex forum

It's here too.....  http://www.kitguru.net/components/cooling/zardon/corsair-h70-review-versus-vantage-nh-d14-4-53ghz/4/

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cases_cooling/noctua_nh-d14_review/4

Both are very good, the difference is not that much....at this point I think it's a matter of what you like....

Not only is the NH-14 a tad better but quieter also....make sure it will fit with your mobo.....

I've decided to go with the Noctua - performance wise they are almost the same, seems to come down to the H70 will be a much cleaner setup, but it seems most reviewers running a high overclock on it prefer to buy better fans which adds to the cost - the Noctua comes with good fans and I figure there's just far less things to break on the Noctua - mainly the two fans which I can easily replace myself, vs if the pump fails or something clogs up etc. on the H70 I'll have to send it back to Corsair.

Ordering day is tomorrow, thanks again to everyone for their input.

Hi David

I have the Noctua unit mounted on an i7 920 o/c to 4GHz. Yes its big, and its heavy but boy it works just fine. Temps (according to Real Temp) never go much above 56 degrees and are about 40 on idle.

One silly thing I did was to install my motherboard etc and THEN realise there is a big metal plate that fits under the board to screw the cooler onto!!  had to dismantle it all and start again.  Duhh !

Good choice though.  Never fancied mixing water with electricity!

Good luck  Pete

Yes, the mounting wall in the case should have a hole in it. Think some cases provide that now.

Lol !  Thanks Bjorn, unfortunately my mounting wall was solid !  Well we learn from our experiences !

And Brian I suppose I should have guessed that the technology of water (sorry -"liquid")  cooling has moved on a pace.  I was brought up with air-cooled motor bike engines so I suppose the Noctua cooler reminds me of happy days gone past! lol  :)

Thanks Pete. While I wait for my parts to come in I'm reading all the manuals to save frustration when I rush to put it together lol. Fortunately there's a video on youtube where they put the D14 on my motherboard so looks like it shouldn't be too difficult.

This setup also works well on my system.  The H50 is very efficient for the radiator size especially with the added fan.
