Defragmenting a SSD

Hi Dave, my understanding: best to be left alone. Simplified explanation: Defrag on a physical hard disk aligns the blocks of any single file to be next to each other, so that they can be read by the drive head almost in one go without having to move the head from one side of the disk to another, which takes lots of time. SSD don't have physical heads so the time penalty doesn't apply.

It also appears that SSDs have limited lifespans in regards to write operations (at least the earlier ones, but this might still be valid). Any defrag will cause many blocks to be read and written all over the place, often a number of times. So a defrag supposedly would shorten the lifespan of your SSD, with hardly or no improvement of performance. So, best to be left alone.

There are, however, defraggers that have SSD algorithms built in.

Must be utter marketing nonsense... I would never ever defrag an SSD!
