Scenery Development on Sims

As an ex-developer I’m curious about the process for each sim.  Are there assets created in XP, for instance, that can be ported to MSFS with relative ease, or is it always pretty much start from scratch?  Any crossover at all between the various platforms?  

And is one platform more difficult to develop on than others?
