Minor update

Rather than lash out completely and spend many more thousands on my existing machine ( and bearing in mind that the i7 range are gonna be replaced next year), I opted to buy the Nvidia GTX480 and a new mobo (instead of spending 1500 bucks on a i7 980), the Asus Rampage III, which is top of the wozza at Asus at the moment, with USB 3.0 Sata 3 and everything that opens and shuts.

So, it's back to the drawing board and strip everything down to the bone and reinstall.

Will take a few pics and give a bit of feedback as to the viability of the upgrade. To tel the truth, I don't expect much of a change from the P6T Deluxe Version 2 I'm currently running, so anything in the way of performance will be a boost.

Didn't expect to be back here so quick, but here's the pics as promised:

It comes in a nice, pretty red box

Somebody went mad with the red and black paint at Asus!

All the extra goodies. Pity they don't tell ya what they are in the manual!

Ready to put the side back on and fire it up!

Well, I gotta say, I'm gob smacked.

I backed up all my Flight Sim stuff off my SSD and all other user files in case I had to reinstall windows and FSX again.

I plugged the power in and truned it on. Went to the BIOS and set a few things up and she started up straight away, right into Windows 7.

I shut her down and bought her back into my office and hooked it up to my triple head2go and other hardware.

Again, fired up, recognized everything and I'm on the net now reporting on it, only an hour later.

Never changed an entire mobo and been able to fire it up like that and it not miss a beat.

The only thing I had to do was re-activate my Windows which took 2 minutes and Bob's my uncle!

I'll do a few tests on her in the next few days and see if the update was indeed worth the 500 bucks.

Now I got the shuffle to do, changing mobo's in all of the other computers in the house.

Glad to hear all is running well for you. I was never fortunate enough to get away without a complete os install after a mobo switch. Let us know how you like it and if there is any performance differnces between the motherboards.

As I said, I've installed it yesterday and it's working faultless.

No reinstalls, everything is working as before (only faster). When I cranked up FSX yesterday, it ran perfectly, except for one aircraft add-on that I just re-installed with no detriment and it's smooth as silk.

Maybe it's my imagination, but FSX is working more efficient. I cap my frames at 25 and sometimes (with the old P6T board) it would waver a few frames here and there, but it seems to be steady at 25 frames now. I wouldn't have expected that a mobo could have that influence although the onboard chipsets (northbridge, southbridge, etc.) are supposed to be better.

Anyhow, I don't care, it runs smoother and that's a bonus, I've got USB 3.0 for my new devices and SATA 3 when the next batch of SSD's hit the market (6GB per second transfer...woohooo!).

Oh, and timmo, I've had the 480 for a while mate. It's just the mobo I changed yesterday, but you're right, it's probably the best upgrade you could do in todays market.

Tennyson glad to hear you in the ROG zone now once you go ROG you never go back. My Rampage II board is the best one I've ever owned and easy too clock, really you cant damage the board, even with a bad clock it will shut down before any damage is done. Trust me I've tried to. Asus or go home baby ;D:P
