Lucid Hydra - Scalable Multi Video Cards Coming 29 Oct 09!

Folks,

I originally posted about the new Lucid Hydra technology over a year ago ( http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=4654.msg35358#msg35358 ) but it now looks like the Lucid Hydra concept is finally leaping onto a real Motherboard for release in late October 09. The references, below, have a couple of pics and this feature, although most likely at a premium, could be utterly fantastic. The Lucid chip allows different Video cards to work together for maximum performance without the hassle of SLI/Crossover. This could, theoretically, provide near 100% scalability using cards even of different architecture such as nVidia with ATI combined together or older Video cards in your cupboard doing something useful along with that new ATI 5870 etc.

If you are coming up to a system rebuild or thinking of replacing your motherboard/video card combo then it may well be worth looking into this when it is released. MSI's website shows a Countdown clock to the 29th Oct for the release of it's first Intel based Motherboard using Lucid Hydra, named 'The Big Bang' (not a good name I think). Go to:

Lucid's Website has further details as well at:

Looks interesting, but I hope their chips are better than their spelling - or have I been wrong all these years - 'fabless' is the new way to spell 'fabulous'?  ???

Maybe old age is creeping on and I need a new Scalable Multi Video Card to brighten my day! ;)

Exciting times, ATI scoops the pool, nVidia waits breathlessly in the wings, and Lucid lurks around the corner - which way to turn? Homework coming up simmers. ;D

Bill,

Actually, their spelling is correct for this situation. 'Fabless' actually refers to the fact that they do not own a semi-conductor fabrication facility, hence the term 'fabless'. Refer to:

Having been around this industry (IT) for a while, I've tried to keep up with every new advancement, but it is becoming more and more impossible.

No sooner is one technology released, then the next is on the doorstep, making your last expensive purchase superfluous.

I can see us getting to a point where the average joe blow will just keep his hands in his pockets until there is some stability in the game again. Who knows, it's so volatile, maybe we will never reach that point again.

I consider myself lucky to have a good measure of finance to spend on my tech, but when people like myself are saying "why should I bother?", I think the industry needs to step back and take a look at the growing lack of confidence in the R&D of technology.

I for one will be taking a side view at all of this stuff until I get some mileage out of the last 5000 bucks I've spent this year!

So what happened to the Lucid Hydra based Motherboard due for release on 29th October 2009?

Well, there are quite a few postings about this and the real answer is probably not going to be found by the end-user, such as myself. I won't make any judgement here but have a look at this article, which explores in detail the possibility that nVidia may not want this Lucid Hydra technology surfacing, and see what you think:
