Derek McAllan
After posting this image a couple of weeks ago... ...I was bemoaning the crappy default landing lights in FSX and how much I hated them. In fact, the whole lights system in FSX is abysmal. Fortunately, some of you simmers smarter than I pointed me in the right direction, and I have, *ahem* seen the light! Wolter was kind enough to point me towards some replacement textures which looked much better than the default, so thanks Wolter! However, several others recommended the payware Shockwave Lights Redux addon, which I caved in and bought. Best bloody $20 I've spent on FSX I reckon. I now have all sorts of "real" lights to work with, and they all look great. Here's some results... Before Shockwave, but with the replacement textures Wolter recommended. Don't mind the missing geometry, like the exhaust or indeed the tail... FSX decided I didn't need those on replay After Shockwave - blindingly bright, just like they should be! Oh, and all the missing bits are back. I've set the C208B up with a full set of Shockwave lights now, basically replacing everything bar the interior lighting. The nav lights look great, they are brighter than the default, and light up the surroundings with the relevant colour. The beacons are much better, they flash convincingly and light up the top of the plane in sync with the flashing, unlike the defaults which for some reason light up the plan out of phase with the beacon's flashing on my computer. The strobes are excellent - bright, attention grabbing, unmissable - just like they should be. Even the taxi lights got a makeover. The best thing about these lights, I think, is that they actually light up the surroundings with spilled light, looking much more realistic. They are a pain in the bum to setup. Most of the lights are fairly straightforward, you just replace the relevant light entry in the aircraft.cfg, but as the landing lights don't have an entry they need to be positioned by trial and error. Time consuming, but the results are definitely worth it I think. Hope you like! Cheers, Derek
Gurdy
if you want an easy way to set up... open the config file for the aircraft load the aircraft into FSX map a key to reload aircraft (I use Ctr+Alt+R) start with the default mapping and just change the lights you want Then reload aircraft .. tweak and repeat save config **remember to just // out the original lights config and use a new entry

John Lovell
They look amazing and great to see you taking to them with exellent results! I did get these, but kinda gave up as I dont have the patience setting them up. I think it would be a good idea if there was a section in this forum dedicated to shockwave lights and peoples settings on relevent aircraft.... might make the suggestion to the mods (if any are reading?) Thanks for sharing these!

Great Idea! There is a repository out there on the net, linked to on the a2a forums, but it doesn't look to have been updated in about 2 years. Any that I do, I'm happy to share. gheeD
No problem, making them is very fun, its a good feeling when you get them to work nicely But also very frustrating when you work on them for a long time then find out somebody has allready made them! Thats why i allways google before making some, found many landing lights allready made that way... Then just implement shockwave nav/beacon/strobe lights myself.
