the MSI Twin Frozr II would give similar low temps to the Zotac, the Zotac AMP Edition also would take up three PCI-E slots in ur case so the MSI Twin Frozr would be the smarter choice if u wanted to add additional expansion cards not to mention that the MSI Twin Frozr is cheaper  ;D

If you're doing overclocking, check that those custom fan using gpu's have voltage control with software unlocked, i was looking at couple HD5870 before looking at gtx480, and some of the custom cooler HD5870's have voltage control disabled in software like msi afterburner, and you'd have to do some hardware modding to get it to work in those.

But so far, that twin frozr is looking best solution in deed. If you need to cooling, that is.

I myself, am looking when first coolers for gtx480 comes to aftermarket, so i can upgrade this stock beast.

edit: After looking, it seems there is a custom cooler to install into stock gtx480 now. From arctic cooling, which is known to be pretty reliable and to do its job well. http://arctic-cooling.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=2_0&mID=619 65€ in local shop + installation screws to fit gtx480 (i guess its originally for hd5870.)

On the features page for the MSI one...

Twin Frozr II Thermal Design

Over voltage function of GPU

Military Class Components

SSC (Solid State Chock) has No Buzz noise and higher current for better overclocking ability.

Hi-C CAP for GPU provides more precise voltage

All Solid CAP for longer lifespan.

PhysX & 3DVision Surround technology

Looks like it's built to be overclocked, are the voltage functions listed the ones you're referring to?

I´ve fitted my 285 with the tri-fan from arctic cooling, and it blows...your mind! ;) It´s very silent and keeps the gpu cool. You have to make sure, when you make your build, that you have enough heatsinks for every bit needing cooling. Different manufacturers have different details and stuff that´ll go hot. And you don´t want to miss it. When you remove the stock cooler make sure to look at the gum-like cooling paste, where the imprints are, ´cause it´ll probably get peeled off when you remove the cooler. Then count your heatsinks that came with your tri-fan. You may have to hacksaw some of the big ones or just buy some small copper heatsinks and GLUE them on. Use Arctic Silver. The stickytape that holds the h.sinks are not to be trusted, even if you clean the surfaces with an eraser. Enzotech make small and very small h.sinks. And use some quality thermal paste for the die. Remember to remove the metal frame surrounding the die before mounting the beast. The chip underneath is smaller than the die, so don´t be alarmed if the contact surface of the heat pipe system seems a bit small. It will take up three slots on your board.

  • 2 weeks later...

For the brief time I flew X-plane 9 I was getting temperature issues trying to run at high settings. And with highmemfix moving workload onto the gpu, I´d say, if you CAN oc your gpu, why not do it?! And to me it´s a nice pasttime to push your stuff for better achievement.
