tennyson
I've just read this article about Seagate's newest drive. It's a hybrid with 500gb platters and 4Gb Nand flash. I only skimmed the article, but to me, it's a step in the right direction for an intermediary between SSD's and the old platter drives. The results of the tests with the new drive are rather unimpressive, but as one fellow points out, it's the first sample and I'm sure once we see the other manufacturers like WD, Samsung and Toshiba get on board, the technology will jump. Costing is the major advantage, tho with the drives costing not much more than a conventional drive. Maybe they've learned enough from the current batch of SSD's to make the right choices with MLC versus SLC and 2 vs. 3 platter and can come up with something that may push the SSD industry along a bit faster or get them to start lowering their very uncompetitive price structure. Anyhow, here's the article: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/seagate-momentus-xt-hybrid-hard-drive-ssd,2638.html Frank
