FTX and memory

Recommended Posts

I am building a new computer and these are the main parts.

EVGA P55 FTW Motherboard

Intel Core i7 860

NOCTUA NH-U12P-SE CPU Cooler

EVGA GeForce GTX 275 FTW Graphics Card

Win7 64bit OS

As the motherboard supports dual channel memory, I have two choices.

4GB or 8GB memory kits.

Does going beyond 4GB give FTX any real advantage or not?

The 8GB kit: Corsair CMD8GX3M4A1600C8 8GB (4x XMS3 2GB) PC-12800 (1600MHz) DDR3 RAM, Non ECC, unbuffered, 8-8-8-24, has some issues.

Are there any problems in installing two 4GB kits instead?

Thanks for any help,

Lyn.

Your board should support Dual Channel DDR-3.

There is theoretically an advantage in 3 x (x Gb) configurations, rather than 2x - but this is in theory - and how much practical benefit you'll see is debatable.

It might be worth seeing whether you can get 6Gb or 12 Gb of low latency DDR3.

Yes - you do get a benefit with complex scenery add-ons with >4Gb on a 64bit O/S.

So much so, that I've just ordered 12Gb of low latency RAM (upgrading from 6G)  That and to help Photoshop CS4 breathe a bit, with large images.

Worth checking other brands - some of the OCZ memory is good.  Heiko swears by Mushkin - but I dunno where I can buy that ;)
