So how does a 2.6 GHz quad against a 3.2 GHz dual core ?

In each case the CPU's were tested at their Unclocked and their maximum achievable clock (which would vary from CPU to CPU). To appreciate the method you would have to study it, but here are the figures best to worst for how they performed in FSX:

Top CPU E8600  uc score 18 clocked score 28  max oc  4.5

2    i7 965            ''      18  "          "    26      "      4.14

3          E8500      "        17  "          "    26      "      4.4

5          QX9650    "        16  "        "    26      "      3.8

7            Q9650    "        16  "        "    25      "    3.96

8    i7 940            "        16  "        "    24      "      4.02

9          E8400      "        15  "        "    26      "    4.4

12          Q9550      "        13  '        "    24      "    3.3

20  i7 920              "        12    "        "    24      "      4.0

There were 41 CPU's tested.      ;)

can anyone post more specifics? like test setups and such. Id be very interested in that

Precis only

Set up:

Five platforms for over forty CPU's - two of interest

LGA 775  mobo Biostar Tpower 145

LGA 1366  mobo Asus PT 6 Deluxe

Common main components: HDD 250GB Samsung Spinpoint P120S; Graphics Zotac GeForce 260 AMP, Air Cooling

Media Benchmark order of performance:

1 - i7965x; 2 -i7940; 3 - i7920; 8 - Q9550; 9 - E8600; 12 - E8500; 13 - E8400

FSX order of performance at highest possible clock on air:

1 - E8600; 2 - i7965x; 3 - E8500; 7 - Q9650; 8 - i7940; 9 - E8400; 12 - Q9550; 20 - i7920

My experience would support that the E8600 runs FSX better then the Q9550 (both chips unclocked).
