  1. Hello all,

Been a while since I’ve posted here (or any other flight sim sites) and I think this will be the right forum to post my question in(?). It has to do with Orbx Central and the User Guide table of contents didn’t list what I wanted to inquire about, boxed edition conversion to D/L.

I’ve been enjoying my FSX on a dedicated Win 7 box since 2013. Well, it appears my SS drive is dying and I can no longer access FSX which was running beautifully for me with A2A planes, F1 Garmin GTN 750’s, Pilot’s meshes, and Orbx products. No repair or reinstall worked nor system restores. The windows performance test shows that my data transfer rate is 50% of what it was for the previous 9 years. And I lost my O/C from 4.3 to 3.5. So, its R.I.P. and I’ll be ordering a new dedicated box in 2 or 3 weeks.

I am close to settling on a new build with Win 10.  I’d prefer Win 11 but the builder looks like they are not ready to make the move (they specialize, and appear to only do flight sim systems). I’m typing this on my new Win 11 laptop as my old 2011 Win 7 vintage laptop died on me back in November and I’m liking Win 11 a lot. Win 10 desktop with all those…windows that appears on it in every screen shot I’ve ever seen of it, just had no appeal for me and I work on the desktop often. The Win 11 desktop is clean as a whistle, the only icon is the Recycle Bin and I got use to working with it fast. I’ll already be 1 OS behind the day I take delivery of the new rig, but, oh well.

I’ve been investigating the latest flight sims from the usual suspects, but primarily MSFS 2020 and P3D. While MSFS appears to be the choice for GA flying (which is my choice to fly) and eye candy, from what I’ve seen in various screen shots Orbx Region Packs (Base and Vector) might still be more to my liking and I’ve been wowed by Orbx products since I started using them years ago. It also seems to be the case that my A2A, F1 Garmin, and Pilot’s products may not/are not useable with MSFS and I’ve found no references to any of those products getting a rebuild for MSFS as the base program is drastically different from that of FSX. The Orbx products available for MSFS appear to be mostly addon A/P’s which are actually at the bottom of the list for me. And I’ve got a book case full of FSX Orbx (80 some products) that should work fine in P3D. I also suspect the learning curve will be less steep with P3D so I’m fairly certain that will be the way forward for me.

On to my question: The Orbx boxed products showed up (I think) as well as the D/L ones I have when I installed the latest Orbx Central and just 2 weeks before my PC started dying. I remember back when Orbx went to the new store concept and downloads only and there was a procedure for converting the boxed versions to DL’s. Is that still the case? I wasn’t able to find anything more current on the matter searching these forums (or I didn’t hit upon the right one) other than a post back in 2019.

Fortunately, all my Global stuff was DL’d so I should be able to get the most recent versions without any issue through the new Orbx Central and purchase the Global building and tree upgrades to get me started. After that is running smooth with my A2A’s, Garmin and REX and Pilot’s and I get some flying time in I want to install all my region packs, all of them purchased boxed/on disc. I’ll tackle the addon A/P’s last and many of them are already DL’s.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide on the process to convert the boxed versions to downloads. Or direct me to a post.

My all Orbx products bookcase (with the exception of an old steelbox edition of MSFS 2004). I made up my own boxes for DL’d Orbx backed up to disc with receipt info and should have e-mail receipts for the boxed in my Outlook if not already in the respective boxes.

  2. Hello all,

Returning to flight simming after a bit of a hiatus. My 2013 vintage Win 7 desktop PC (which lost its OC) needs to be replaced with something more capable of running MFS 2020. My current box will continue to run FSX on a 26" non Hi-Def monitor on my second rig whose 2010 Win 7 desktop is dying a slow death of blue screens after an hour of use.

I plan on going as state of the art as I can within my budget with the new build. I am using Win 11 on my new (this month, replaced a 2007 one) laptop and hoping to go with it in the new build, and I like it. (Never went to Win 10, didn't care for all the clutter on the desktop, Win 11 is clean).

I've been using a 40" Sony Bravia HI-Def LCD at 1920 x 1080 with FSX since 2013. So it sounds like I need to get a 4K monitor or turn off HDR10 in Windows and the game, and give up some eye candy as a result.

(Steep re-learning curve after 2+ years away from my mostly daily FS habit that started back in 1998)

    Thanks for any input

    Frank

EDIT: just come across your post of Oct 25, if those are on a 1920 x 1080 screen they look very good to me!
