P3D: The ultimate settings

Recommended Posts

I have finalized my settings on P3D with the discovery of an ideal combination with Affinity Mask at 243 and texture quality on 6.

The result is outstanding with everything maxed (except traffic = 0),  I never had so neat and precise textures with no blueries at all and a constant FPS30 (blocked). Here on my favorite flight within Sicilly where the OpenLC textures are so nice and detailed. Thanks for watching !

This looks really nice. What other settings are you using within P3D?

But I could never bring myself to have traffic at 0.  Without other aircraft at airfields, oils ain't oils.

A good way to reduce the FPS hit of AI traffic is to use this tool: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/451048-traffic-optimizer-for-p3d/page-22#entry3120930. It keeps the number of AI planes in check by removing those further away, so you still get busy local airports while your system performance is not affected by AI planes which are too far to be seen (or heard on the radio).

Very nice shots and congrats on getting your P3D to how you like it. Ian has a point - local traffic at airfields really helps the immersion factor. Also, I see you have a default aircraft in your shots - how does your system perform with a complex add-on?

Cheers,

Kev

Everyone, be careful with TymK's suggestion of the software over at AVSIM...........Nothing against TymK, but I tried that link and received 3 Trojan viruses and about 8 unwanted installations of various smilie, financial, registry editing tools etc etc. I have just finished running an extensive virus cleanup on my machine and the removal of the Trojans.

Hmm, that's a strange one... I've just re-checked the link and everything is fine. I've scanned the file with Kaspersky and Malwarebytes, it's clean. Nothing bad on the Mediafire page either, tried with Firefox and IE11. What browser are you using?

Many thanks for your comments. I will send my P3D and Nvidia cfg tonight. Yes, the aircraft is the default Baron, FPS are the same with the QualityWings RJ85/100, just a bit slower (20-25) in very cloudy situations. Agree for the AI traffic but my priority is the scenery as sharp as possible. I will move to AI when I will change my GC for a gtx780 or 980. Kind regards.

I understand, no hard feelings at all ;)

I was just really surprised since I'm very careful about that stuff. I always keep my website scanning features enabled, but there were no alerts at all. I hope your system is fine now.

Hi Teecee, I am also answering on comments from Michael63 and TymK, after 3 weeks on intensive testings of all values and Prepar3D.cfg and the Nvidia configuration tool.    My conclusions of course are in line with my solid bu not higher end PC specs and might not work on all PC.s. With more testings I will certainly also adapt some values.

The first culprit to the bad graphic impression we have first in P3D (v2.4) is definitely FXAA which gives a too polished unrealistic graphic, turn it off on your P3D graphic page you will get much more sharp textures.

On the same page, I have MSAA 8xsamples, Texture filtering = anisotropic 16x, Texture resolution 4096x4096, Vsync is on with tripple buffering checked, and my target frame rate blocked at 30fps. Remember to replicate the 30fps in the Nvidia cfg tool by selecting Vsinc = half refresh rate for coherence between Nvidia and P3D.

In the P3D.cfg file, I have entered Fiber-frame-time-fraction = 0.11, created a new chapter (JOBSCHEDULER) with AffinityMask= 243 (ideal for a quad core Intel CPU with HT on). Under the graffic section, do not forget the old HighMemFix=1 and set texture quality to 6, you will see a huge improvement with your textures.

As I am not in front of my P3D PC now, I cannot give more details but will forward my P3D and Nvidia.cfg files tomorrow if someone is interested for more details.

Regards, Patrick, Geneva

TeeCee, this should also help you (From the P3D site and documentation) :

Editing Prepar3D.cfg

How to Make Changes to your Prepar3D.cfg Configuration File
  1. Locate the Prepar3D.cfg file
  2. Create a backup of the original Prepar3D.cfg
  3. Right click file and click "Open", "Edit", or if prompted choose notepad or your other favorite text editor
  4. Add the below text into the specific sections to make the desired changed
  5. Save the newly updated Prepar3D.cfg and begin Prepar3Dâ„¢

Below are entries to place in Prepar3D.cfg. They have the headings inclosed in brackets and the entries are bolded, followed by Performance Tuning Tips on the intended purpose of the fix.

[DISPLAY]

TextureMaxLoad=6

Non-Default entry. This entry will not exist in your Prepar3D.cfg file by default and must be added to the file.

Performance Tuning Tip:

This can induce stutters. Use multiples of 3 only such as 3, 6, 9, etc. This is perfect for photorealistic scenery

[TERRAIN]

SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=30

Non-Default entry. This entry will not exist in your Prepar3D.cfg file by default and must be added to the file.

Performance Tuning Tip:

This variable is the number of frames that the terrain engine will wait for terrain textures to be loaded into video memory before forcing new tiles of terrain triangles to be rendered.

[GRAPHICS]

SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=1 (TeeCee = very important to change the number for any change in the cfg.file, this will amend your shaders)

Non-Default entry. This entry will not exist in your Prepar3D.cfg file by default and must be added to the file.

Performance Tuning Tip:

Using this rebuilds your shader cache by incrementing the number each time you make a change to the Prepar3D.cfg.

[JOBSCHEDULER]

AffinityMask=14 (TeeCee, I have mine at 243, works fare much better)

Non-Default entry. This entry will not exist in your Prepar3D.cfg file by default and must be added to the file.

Performance Tuning Tip:

By default, Prepar3D will use all available processor cores. On machines with four or more cores, it will dedicate a core to rendering tasks. The easiest method for modifying the affinity mask is to open the windows calculator in programmer view, select the binary display mode, and flip the bits in the binary number displayed to select which cores the application should run on. Note that the cores are represented right to left.

[MAIN]

FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.33 (Mine is 0.11, I am getting too much stutter over 0.15, and 0.10 and below create blueries).

Non-Default entry. This entry will not exist in your Prepar3D.cfg file by default and must be added to the file.

Performance Tuning Tip:

This setting, which defaults to a value of .33 (33%), defines the percentage of each frame that is devoted to loading scenery. Increasing this number can reduce "the blurries", but it can cause stutters, and can also reduce the overall frame rate. Try reducing the number to the lowest level where you still get smooth scenery paging. This will vary depending on disk speed as well as the type of flying, as well as the selected scenery settings.

For MIchael63 and others:

As requested, please find my NVIDIA settings (translated from French, sorry if I missed some translation):

AA FXAA:  Activated - make sure it is unchecked in the game setting otherwise textures look unrealisticly polished !!!!

AA Gamma correction: Activated

AA Mode: Improve application settings

AA Settings: 8x CSAA

AA Transparency: 8x super sample

Cuda graphic processors: All

Cache des ombrages (shader cache ?): Activated

DSR Factors: 4x (native resolution) This one seems to bring a lot of improvement

DSR Smoothness: 33%

Anisotropic filtering: 16x

Texture filtering LOD distorsion: Clamped

Texture filtering Sample optimisation: Deactivated

Texture filtering quality: High Quality

Texture filtering trilinear: Activated (but greyed out - presume not applicable)

Power management mode: Maximum performance

Ambiant occlusion: Performances

Threaded optimisation: Auto

Vsinc: Adaptive (1/2 fresh rate)               = 30, in line with my blocked FPS30 in the game settings - very important to limit blueries in high density areas

Prerendered frames: 3

Triple buffering: Activated

Virtual reality prerendered frames:  1

Thats'it. I do not pretend it to be ideal as I am not an expert in GC settings but it works very well with my config and the game/P3D.cdg settings. Have a nice day.

Was pretty sure that this is no longer applicable in version 2.4. I just removed it altogether.

[TERRAIN] SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=30

I was missing this in my cfg file. What happens if this setting is higher, or lower?

[GRAPHICS] SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=1

Really do not understand what this does... "Using this rebuilds your shader cache by incrementing the number each time you make a change to the Prepar3D.cfg."

Guess I need to read this guide over on the LM site.

Most folks will tell you that you just load up P3D and go fly.  Very little if any tweaking required.  I am trying to remove it all and start from that.

NI settings also have little effect now, from what I have read.

I suspect that P3D is looking excellent on your system, Patrick, largely because of 2-3 basic settings and is running well in spite of (and not because of) many of the other tweaks that you have added (carried over from FSX).

Certainly I am no expert and just another P3D pilgrim looking for answers.

Good your point Ripcord. I am not an expert as well I just try to make my sim run smoother as possible.

But I can tell you that I have seen a huge improvement in visuals, without changing any games settings, since I have increased the texture quality to 6 (cannot be achieved in game) and the affinity mask to 243.

Purpose of this post was just to share some shots and not to provide recommendations for which I am not qualified.

I am just answering on some members questions regarding my settings and its fair to share our experiences through this forum .

Cheers. Patrick

Patrick, I tried your settings after you posted the whole .cfg file and  I see a definite improvement in the scenery and water (though I still cannot run with HDR Lighting on..way too dark)..I seem to be right on the edge of tearing now though (very occasional flashes) and wonder which of the new settings might have caused this so that I can reduce the number slightly? For Michael and TeeCee, I am very pleased that these settings have brought improvements in your graphics and smoothness of the sim.

TeeCee, for the HDR issue, I would suggest you contact the P3D support forum unless someone here has an idea on what could impact.

Have a nice day. Patrick

  • 1 month later...

Did a flight yesterday from Essendon to Penfield(OZx) and I was so disappointed flying over YMML that I stopped taking screenies. The scenery was blurred at a very short distance. Barely one quarter of rwy 16/34 was clear.

So last night started searching the FTX Forums and came across this post. Too late in the evening to make the changes you suggested.

Up at 4:00am today and did a b u of the P3D cfg file, made the suggested changes and the rest is history.

Just flown over YMML and I cannot believe the transformation. 16/34 is now as clear as for all of it's length and the difference in the overall appearance is staggering.

Many thanks for your suggestions which have made an incredible change for me.

Regards

Martyn

This has become a very interesting topic and I like the input from this community to help each other out, it will be and still is a case of trial and error because of the great differences in all the computer systems people use.

I stumbled across this topic after getting blurries in P3D 2.4

I have to say this really worked!

My system is a laptop with Nvidia 870M, Quad core i7, 16gb RAM, SSD, Windows 8.1 64, and quite alot of addons.

For my particular system it works and cleared all my blurries, even flying a complex Q400, below a thunderstorm from active sky, across FTX AU

Hi All - Apologies for the long post but if it helps even one person improve their P3D experience than it will be more than worth it.

One of the things I did to get my P3D looking sharp was to leave Nvidia Inspector untouched (default), set my AA and filtering in game and set the DSR on my video card (GTX760) to 4X native resolution, which you can now do with the newest drivers in your nvidia control panel, and run in full screen. I lost no frames at all, and my P3D has never looked better.

I can run P3D with sliders maxed and have not had any frame issues as of yet, although I have my frames locked at 25. My PC is nothing special, i7 2600 (3.4gz) stock clock, 8gb ram, GTX 760 graphics card. If it struggles there is 2x and 3x native resolution options also that will still help a lot I would imagine.

I really hope this info helps someone but as we always say, every machine is different.

A few examples below, it is unrecognizable compared to what it was like before this change, I was considering going back to FSX.

If anyone needs more info on how to set up the DSR I am more than happy to help.

Cheers

I have just setup P3d v2.5 +hotfix. Have not tweaked anything so far and hence have a lot of shimmering and blurry textures especially at ymml

Please would someone advise if the settings in this post works for the latest p3d build?
