The emergency landing on the beach is a risky proposition but if you lose power your choices are limited but to try and take off again. Looking at it he was going to have to dive to the left to avoid those cliffs even if he got off the ground. New engine, new prop, new wing... Bet he wishes he towed it off the beach in the first place although I guess he and everyone else kept their lives.
