An exploratory flight

As you may have seen in my last post, Ermintrude was awaiting my arrival and after a pleasant night we shall partake in a trip around Lord Howe Island.

1.KtaE.jpg

Plenty of room to get past the other ramp occupant.

2.u43T.jpg

YLHI is an important stop for light aircraft transiting the Tasman. In 2009 the runway was severely damaged by heavy rain.

3.18Dt.jpg

Roach Island is directly below the Eaglet. The islands were claimed by the British in 1788 and first inhabited in 1834.

4. H1gFc.jpg

Ned's Beach with some of the Kentia Palms on the right of the peninsular.

5.uMNUt.jpg

North Head. Whaling was the first industry with the island being a supply depot.

6.mvnOR.jpg

North Bay and Old Settlement Beach to the right.

7.w6aZE.jpg

Lagoon Beach. After the whaling declined the Kentia Palm became and still is a major industry. The palms are a popular indoor plant.

8.5tC7.jpg

Mount Lidgbird 2549ft and Mount Gower 2871ft. Kentia Palms cover the mountains. Sale of their seeds are also part of the industry.

9.MRBqs.jpg

Tourism is the other big industry, but only 400 are allowed on the island at any one time.

10.y2JmO.jpg

Gower Island. There are many unique types of bird amongst the 220 resident species.

11.IcTG.jpg

Boat Harbour. Several bird species have become extinct due to feral animals.

12.Wp5Af.jpg

An eradication programme has seen the demise of cats and dogs while goats are under control.

13.yfHUJ.jpg

Hope I have not disturbed Gerold on his luxury cruiser. Come and join us for a barbie later.

14.BYcVR.jpg

A huge extermination programme is underway to try and keep on top of rats. Introduced plants are posing another problem.

15.IKdpU.jpg

I cannot tell you what Ermintrude just said , I hope the my eyes don't give the game away.

16RQMT.jpg

There a no nasty poisonous or bitey creatures on the island.

17.CRHsW.jpg

Well that is it. The SAAB will be back in the morning for the next part of the trip, so......what are we going to do now....what are we going to do now...

That is quite the multitasking feat Martyn , flying the plane and taking great screenshots . And then having a very distracting copilot to deal with .

Well done my friend , well done . ???>:D

Cheers
