VH-KDK
This interesting early jet was built by North American. 1. First flying in 1946 the FJ-1 Fury was the first operational jet in the USN 2. The wings, tail and canopy were derived from the P-51 Mustang. 3. On 10 March 1948 the Fury became the first operational USN jet to land on a carrier. 4. With its slow speed and poor climb rate the need for catapult launching soon became apparent. 5. The wings could not be folded due to dive brakes making carrier storage a problem. 6. Barstow. A kneeling nose wheel along with a swivelling jockey wheel meant the Fury could be parked close to each other tail high. 7. Victorville. After just over a year in operational service the Furys were phased out in favour of the Panther. 8. They were then transferred to Naval Reserve Unius before being wfu in 1953. 9. At Hinkley with Mount General just above the lake. 10. Edwards AFB. 1 prototype and 30 production aircraft were built but 70 more cancelled. 11. The type was then fitted with swept wings and evolved into the F-86 Sabre as can bee seen by the familiar nose shape. All straight vees with minimal cropping. Hope you enjoy.
