The Me 323 was a 6 engine development of the Me 321 glider.

213 of the Me 323 are thought to have been built and they were the largest land based transport aircraft of WW2.

2.NESFn.jpg

12 tonnes could be carried with RATO assisted take off.

3.QLsZb.jpg

The speed at sea level was only 136mph which decreased with higher altitude making it an easy target.

4.Z3RH0.jpg

They were first used in the Tunisian Campaign due to the heavy losses of Axis shipping. 27 Me 323s with a Me 109 escort were attacked by 7 squadrons of Spitfires and P-40s with 20 being lost for the loss of 3 P40s.

5. S3OqL.jpg

Being such a slow and large aircraft, air superiority was vital and none were believed to have survived in service after the summer of 1944.

6. Ns9W.jpg

It was able to absorb great damage unless carrying a cargo of fuel.

7.LTfQY.jpg

They were powered by 6 Gnome-Rhone 14N-48 engines.

All straight vees with minimal cropping.

Martyn, your hangar must be a panopticon of bizarre planes - very nice pics!

Always nice to see something new, at least for me. That's a big one but like you say, with that size and slow moving, it's the ideal target. Thanks for sharing.

Really a special one. A predecessor of today´s 747, more or less.

You are making me feel old. Seen these on documentaries over the years but now brought to life on FSX and great to be able to be in control.
