VH-KDK
Lake Eildon is situated 110 km NE of Melbourne. It is a popular recreation are mainly for water skiing, fishing, bush walking and camping. The Goulburne River was dammed in the 1920s to create the 2nd largest water storage in Victoria with a capacity of 3.3 million megalitres. Most of the water supplies the Goulburne Valley with irrigation but a small percentage is pumped to Melbourne via a contraversial pipe line. In the recent drought the capacity dropped to a historical low of 15% which devastated the tourist industry but now the dam is full again after several wet years. The Maroondah Highway which is the main road to Melbourne crosses the lake at Bonnie Doon. This is the main centre for tourism especially fishing and water skiing. The dam wall at Eildon. The Goulborne River flows away here to the Murray. The Pondage below the dam is popular for catching large trout. The Jerusalem Creek which is a centre for houseboats although none seem to be here today. The Big River Arm is good for fishing but very quiet as there is little access here. A climb over the 1000m peaks finds Jameison which is another popular tourist town. The Howqua Arm. Goughs Bay. The Delatite Arm. Behind the Cherokee is The Pines, a busy camping area Ford Inlet near Mansfield.

VH-KDK
Thanks for all your kind comments. Too long ago now The Pines were a favourite camping spot for our circle of friends. Fishing in the Big River and then boating from wherever we chose to camp. Great times. Doing us Aussies proud, nice descriptions. It's also a major waypoint, ELW, on the way to Sydney from Melbourne. Bonnie Doon - Tell 'im he's dreamin'! - The Castle wasn't it? You are correct sir, and what a great movie.
