FS2020 - Nvidia 2080 8gb to 3080 10gb or 12gb upgrade

Recommended Posts

Hi flyers

I play FS2020 in 2560 x 1440 and have an Intel i7-8700k processor with 32gb of Corsair 3200Mhz ram.

I have owned an MSI 2080 Gaming X Trio 8gb graphics card for 3.5 years and it is an excellent graphics card for FS2020.

As you all maybe aware, the prices of Nvidia graphics cards have recently started to reduce to much more 'reasonable' prices.

I was thinking of upgrading my 2080 8gb card to a 3080 10gb or 12gb card and would be interested to hear your views.  I can easily sell my 2080 card on Ebay for c. £400 at present, before Ebay commission/fees.

My queries are:

- Do you think it is worth upgrading from a 2080 8gb to a 3080 10gb or 12gb card now?

- Will I see a noticeable performance increase in FPS in FS2020 by upgrading?

- Is it worth waiting instead for the Nvidia 4000 card series later this year e.g. the 4080?

Thanks.

My own experience is that a relatively humble 1070ti is more than adequate for running MSFS at 2K.

It depends really on whether you are chasing the appearance, which would be unchanged, the visual

performance which would be unlikely to be significantly improved, or statistics, which can only be

detected by constantly running monitoring software.

Interesting view Nick.

I just found the following article which shows a good graph at various resolutions in Ultra quality DX11 (per their specific test scenario) for the MSI 3080 Gaming X Trio 10gb card for FS2020.

https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_rtx_3080_gaming_x_trio_review,20.html

At 2560 x 1440 the 1070ti achieves 29 frames per second, the 2080 achieves 42 frames per second and the 3080 achieves 48-50 frames per second.

Therefore for 8 frames per second gain (or c. 16% FPS gain) from a 2080 to 3080, it is hard to justify the price of the upgrade to a 3080.

Also presumably when the developers have nailed and released a stable DX12 in FS2020 this should enhance visuals and frames per second further with some existing cards.

DX12 won’t give You any more fps. DX12 gives developers ability to easily implement new visual effects. What would give us more fps is rewriting whole game to use more than 4 cores at 100%. It boggles my mind that in 2020 and beyond software developers so rarely write programs that can utilize 10+ cores/20+ threads, except for benchmarking software.

This is a very useful site for comparing figures.
UserBenchmark: Nvidia RTX 2080 vs 3080

The comparison may be reflected in the MSFS frame rate, if that is what you wish to achieve.

More interesting are the prices, which are manufacturers' list prices.

Today's prices do not compare well and there is some way to go before sanity returns to the graphics card market.

Hi Nick

If my 2080 card does not have HDMI 2.1, yet a 3080 card does have HDMI 2.1 and I have a 55" Oled TV with HDMI 2.1 (i.e. no need to buy an expensive dedicated 4k PC monitor) - do you think the upgrade is worth it to enjoy 4k visuals (instead of 2560 x 1440) on a large Oled screen with good FPS and refresh rate?

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Indeed, my own practice is to lock the frame rate at 25, using a 75 Hz monitor at the 20 fps setting in the game,

which gives 25 fps and then switch off the frame rate counter and look at the picture quality on the screen.

I agree. I have always found the best way to improve frame rates is to turn off the counter;)
