Popular Post renault
Well it's our last day, and you would expect that we should be flying again But our boss, being the considerate manager that he is, sent us a text yesterday afternoon and said thanks for all your drone photos. They really helped us to evaluate the technology. So take today off and we'll see you both tomorrow. So a late night , and a later start and we decided to play tourist. Here are a few additional snaps along the way Cheers Pete (the scribe) I've said this before but I love the attention to detail @Ken Hall It's just outstanding! Apparently you can go up to the top. The views are much better We don't have a plan, so we'll just start walking along the seafront to see what we shall see. Wow now that is a find .... I never expected to see that on a house here (I grew up in New England) This is a classic "Widows Walk" or sometimes called a "Widows Watch" . The are two stories to go with it. Let's go with the more interesting one first. The name supposedly is linked to the wives of sailors who would climb up to the roof to watch for their loved ones. Often it was in vain and they never returned , hence the name "Widows Walk" . They were accessed through a ladder and trap door and were usually open to the elements as this one is, but some were quite fancy and enclosed in glass. Often they were wives of whalers, since sailors in that industry would often be gone for several years at a time. The more practical story is associated with something much more mundane. Typically the chimney was very close to the Windows walk platform. Back in the day, it was not at all uncommon to have chimney fires , which was a very serious issue, So the family would store buckets of water and sand on the platform to be used to pour into the chimney in case they had the misfortune to have a fire. I think I'll go with the first story I can only assume that the Ai was having a bit of a "hissy fit" with this one. Obviously , you need to be careful with instructions. Asking for a two story house with balcony on all sides may deliver something which is not be quite what you had in mind. Ditto for this one as well. But I have t say it does make for some very interesting architecture all the same. Now for the famous tiled roof , first discovered by the famous amateur archeologist TTM @TigerTigerM, not that many years before. It is in a remarkable state of preservation. The colors look just as vibrant as if it were built yesterday. Must be the Mediterranean Climate We've just stopped for a quick coffee. It is just as warm out as it looks from the snaps. Just glorious And this is where we had dinner last night. A wonderful place. Great food and ambience. We really recommend it , if you're visiting some time. Yep, great weather, a good companion and sun glinting off the water. Who could ask for anything more .... So we decided to take a little boat tour of the harbour. Life is too short to let a little bit of flaking paint put us off. Well unfortunately , it's time for us to bid adieu . We've really enjoyed visiting with you and sharing our weekend on Catalina . Turned out that it actually was a holiday weekend for us all which was very nice. So remember when you see the orange Coast Guard in the skies in south Cal , give a friendly wave . It just might be us , doing what we love to do. All the best ! Edited May 31, 2021 by renault 8 1

Ken Hall
We will miss you Pete, come back anytime it’s always a pleasure viewing your screenshots. I did think about adding some dirt on top of those glorious tiles but I just couldn’t do it, so I polished them up a bit instead. great story telling, I didn’t know about the widows walk, great research, reminds us just how tough times were for sailors of yesteryear.

I appreciate the comments Aside from physically smiling at people and receiving one in return (which seems to be universal ) my life experience has taught me that hand gestures and emoji's are best used sparingly if at all. This is a very nice forum that I enjoy so much, but some of my experiences, although hilarious would no doubt have me banned forever , so I shan't go into any details either publicly or privately. And so to you both I enjoyed, enjoyed , enjoyed your thoughts which is represented by All the best to both of you And John, just so you won't worry , I have dozens of others. Tell me when you're on holidays, so I will know when to post them ... grin, grin. Ah, .... I'm welling up ! Thank you . It is appreciated and I am very pleased you enjoyed them. At one point in my career, I lived in an area that had many houses with Widows walks , which is how I came to know about them They tend to be found on what locally would be called "Grand Houses" , that historically were often owned by Captains, And what you gave us was certainly in form and spirit of a "Grand House" which is why I got excited and investigated Thank you and Tim so much for the details you give us. I realize it is a lot of work to get it right, but for me it is very appreciated. Unfortunately for all concerned , loved ones on shore often found that a ship had encountered trouble , from the Captain's wives spending endless days peering into the horizon , until the inevitable was realized . 10 hours ago, Iain Emms said: Grand shots these Pete. cheers Iain Thank you Iain Cheers Pete 8 hours ago, VH-KDK said: A magnificent set to end your visit to Catalina.'
