Following Jean Marc´s suggestion....

Recommended Posts

After flying down the East African Rift I could not resist to follow @jean marc´s video link and his flight suggestion.

So I got a slightly quicker plane and took off from Djibouti.

I love the precise depiction of these instruments.

Lake Afrera, Ethiopia. The nearest road and civilisation to where we are heading today.

And here we reach the Erta Ale lava lake, just in front of the P-38.

Unfortunately we do not have LavaFlow (yet?).

We got to climb significantly from the depression zone towards Mekele!

We managed to, but I am not sure if a Tiger Moth could do it as well.

The price to pay is the reduced view out of this cockpit. Ezdok helps.

Wow!  Excellent series, Gerold!  Would hate to have an engine failure above that boiling pot...

Herman

An, there is enough energy in it to blow you back into the air. Would you walk to the rim as those guys in the video did?

Well, with what recently happened in NZ in the back of my mind... I really don't know, Gerold.

beautiful shots and great plane choice thanks Gerold O0   <- - yes it is an Afar's head which suits well here :)

A very special thanks to you, Jean Marc - for commenting here, but much more for your inspiration!

Lovely set, great aircraft - two engines always better than one - I'm doing my tour in my favourite "fast" piston twin the PA31-310 - but I think your P38 might be a little faster than my Piper cruise of 180-200 Knots TAS depending on wind

Thanks TT. As you can see the P-38 goes just over 250 kts, which is nearly the maximum of non-jetplanes in my hangar. But the 200 kts of your Piper should also move you quite fast from one interesting place to the next... The continent is just so big!
