Scary that you remember my travels, "AI" John! And you located the dust correctly... 2 hours ago, paulk said: YAYE - I think the windsock is the one at the end of runway 31? Perfect Paul, just perfect. Even the windsock is correct! You can see Kata Tjuta in the background, btw. Who wants to post another shot?
John Heaton
Not really mate - you always seem to be down under a lot - and we couldnt miss the big red Paul seemed to think it OK if I put up another teaser that may not be an Orbx The aircraft is I think a 707 and the pic about '75

paulk
I think the airport is in the Middle East, if it's the same airport, I had to go work there for a few weeks about 15 years ago, although, it looked a lot newer and bigger than it does in your photo John 😀. If I am correct, one very special aircraft used to fly there in the 1970s. P.S. Are you in a Cathy Pacific 707? Edited July 12 by paulk

Hence my Cathay Pacific guess. The airport I’m thinking of used to have a BA Concorde service to London in the mid 1970s.

wolfko
1 hour ago, ikbenik said: Addis Abeba airport in Ethiopia? I googled a bit and Prune says the only African destinations of QF in the 1970s have been Johannesburg, Mauritius, Harare and Cairo. Out of these it only could be Cairo. But QF also flew to many destinations in the Middle East and Asia which would fit to the pic. However by 1975 QF had switched most of their long haul flights to B747s. paulk
1 hour ago, boetie said: A total guess as Paul said Middle East and Googling, Bahrain? That’s the airport I was thinking of also - Bahrain. Think it used to be a stopping pointing / fueling point between London and Singapore then on to Australia. BA did a Concorde service there in the early years, until the Americans let them in. Stillwater
Nice & wild quest, to make it easier we should get back to a relation with Orbx airports - once we have solved this one. I just guess Alice Springs…
John Heaton
2 more clues - was the subject of brilliant aviation story by Neville Shute - a story I absolutely recommend and where this airfield had only one hangar !!!!! The 2 nd - amongst all the guesses - is that it was the first/last stopover on the Kangaroo route PS -its not always easy to find an Orbx airport I have been to - for me to take part - so this will be the last one from me
paulk
I have very much enjoyed the last few days of your quizzes John. But appreciate it’s not for everyone. I am sticking with Bahrain.

John Heaton
Yep - you and Graham got it early The book - I mentioned was "Round the Bend" by Neville Shute - the writer of many flying stories and Australian Outback Bahrain was the normal refueling stop - sometimes Tehran - and was great for Duty free Dubai - at the time was a goat paddock - until they built a duty free one - and look what is there now No point in my doing anymore - under the rules - "because they would be too easy
