Orbx XP Washington Installation MAC troubleshooting

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have just bought the scenery yesterday and failed to install it thru orbX central App and even manually. Using the Orbx Central APP just ERASED my 1Tb SSD drive where I had my full X-plane installation. It is gonna take weeks to re-install everything. It is a desolation.

Manual installation created a _ful4284b6f7-528d-450a-b836-038bb7a5f7c3.zip file of 42 Gb which is just unable to unzip (download thru Safari).

I do not know what to do.
Thank you for your help here. Nicolas
I run Mac OS Sierra on iMac 5K Aghz/i7 32Gb AMD Radeon R9 (XP is 11.34)

I am very concerned to hear this, we've tested this for many months and haven't had this occur. We'll be investigating this today.

What did you do before it deleted your drive contents? i.e did you just press install on TrueEarth Washington? How far did the install progress?

Can you please provide send us a screenshot of your Orbx Central downloader settings page, which can be located in Settings => Downloader (similar to the screenshot below)image.png

Hello Mitchell, here the following : I have tried with both and just one checked boxes and it erased the entire disk both time. Then I have tried to download thru the Manual process and the file would never unzip.

Thanks

Nicolas

Thanks Nicolas.

I understand how this occurred now. During the install of a product, once it completes (or fails), it will clear your Temporary Location as that is where it stores the files its downloading. I believe that once you tried to install Washington, it cleared the temporary directory which was set to the root of your SSD.

We'll be doing a few things to address this:

  • Making sure that only files that Orbx Central has downloaded are deleted from temporary and backup folders.
  • Creating a new folder within the given temporary folder so that other data in that drive/folder is protected.
  • Adding more safeguards when setting a temporary folder/backup folder so that adding the root of a drive shouldn't be possible.

I sincerely apologise for having this occur to you. We'll be doing our best to learn from this issue and address it with a range of fixes in the next Open Beta update.

I'd suggest setting your Temporary Location and Backup Location (via pressing Edit on each) to a folder within your SSD that you've made. For example:

  • Make a new folder called Orbx in /Volumes/Samsung_T5, with a Temp and Backups folder inside it.
  • Then set your temporary location to Samsung_T5/Orbx/Temp
  • and your backup location to Samsung_T5/Orbx/Backups

This will prevent the current version of Central from damaging your drive in the meantime while we prepare a patched version.

The manual download will only work with FTX Central 3 for Windows, therefore you cannot use it to install Washington on your Mac.

Hey folks,

Something similar (but not as damaging) happened to me whereby after installation, the library folder I had selected on my portable hard drive was completely deleted, with no installed product to be found. Didn't erase the whole hard drive thankfully...

Wondering if it would be helpful if I attached my log file? Happy to send anything that might help.

Also - is there any other alternative for installation while we wait for an update?

Hi! Can you also send a photo of your Downloader page in settings (see one of my previous posts in this topic for info). The log file would also be helpful :) Thanks!

The update will be coming out in the next few hours, we don't have an alternative at the moment.

Hey Mitchell!

Screen shot of my downloader page below, and log file attached.

Basically, I have a portable hard drive dedicated to my X plane backup files that I selected as a download/install location. The plan was to create a shortcut to the files in a duplicate custom scenery folder on the portable hard drive, as I just didn't have 200+ GB free on my Mac. Thanks for the quick response!

Thanks for the info!

It looks like you're in a similar boat to Nicolas. Since your temporary path is set to the same folder as where your library is, it'll delete that whole folder once its done with the install. We'll be updating Central so it will only delete certain files that Central creates, rather than the whole directory. The new update is almost ready and I'll let you know when its available. Thanks for your patience!
