GL_FSX
This is where I am right now with regard to the new processor. At the moment I´m opting for an i7-920 – mainly because of the price-tag, that comes with the faster ones. Again, any comments, pro´s and con´s are highly appreciated. Processor: Intel Core i7-950 @ 3.06Ghz (boxed) http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37150&processor=i7-950&spec-codes=SLBEN http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a401758.html @ 450,00€ Intel Core i7-940 @ 2.93Ghz (boxed) http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37148&processor=i7-940&spec-codes=SLBCK http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a366184.html @ 450.00€ Intel Core i7-920 @ 2.67Ghz (boxed) http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37147&processor=i7-920&spec-codes=SLBCH,SLBEJ http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a366185.html @ 230,00€ Mai I also ask for your expert comments with regard to following thougts: I´m still puzzled with this personal “skepticism†of mine, that results from the well known fact, that (a) FSX critically depends on actual processor speed and ( FSX certainly is NOT and will NOT be a multiprocessor game. Notwithstanding the advantages of finally getting rid of the “FSB bluesâ€, memory management issues in the new Core i7 processors, I´m still asking myself the same question again and again: what kind of an advantage will it bring if to go for an i7-920 with reduced processor clockspeed. Don´t I pay twice as much for 3 (“useless ?â€) processor cores still running slower than an E8600 Core2 ? I probably forgot to mention, that (a) overclocking is not my thing (not experienced), and I also won´t go up in screen resolution as I´m using a beamer (SXGA; 1280 X 1024) for my visuals. In the final stage I plan to use 2-3 of them coupled to a Matrox Triple Head graphics expansion module.

I am curious to this answer also, if fsx would run equal or better than an overclocked i7, on an overclocked cheaper 'smaller' cpu id like to know
Tim Harris
Well I have a: E8400 OC'ed to 3.6 i7-920 OC'ed to 3.6 and 4.0 The i7-920 completely blows the E8400 out of the water..... and yes FSX does use all 4 cores of the i7-920 But don't get an i7-920 if you are not willing to OC it
John Venema
This forum and community are always generous with their advice, but please ... 6-7 topics posted just to get confirmation about your PC specs? That's spamming, sorry. I've deleted your other posts.
Ian Routley
The answer has been consisten for a while now: 1) the i7 platform offers significant bandwidth advantages 2) standard clock speeds will not be enough to shine Overclocking a 920 seems to be best bang for buck, but if you don;t want to - then get a higher clocked processor. You will however, pay through the nose for it.
Guest cirrusnature
I'm only using the baby i7 & the difference between stock and OC is staggering.

GL_FSX
THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE AND YOUR EXPERT ADVICE ON THAT TOPIC ! Seems like the only way to go is to have to learn how to overclock an processor I´ll make it
Heiko Glatthorn
If you google for overclocking guide (or i7 overclocking guide) you'll get countless hits. Those guides have many pages and describe everything very well. Much better than somebody could explain here with a few words. I highly recommend to read (and understand) before touching the BIOS.
