Why was it performed so?

 

Here are missing the circumstances of the situation.

 

But, some considerations, and everything does not depend on the type of aircraft.

 

If visual approach, simply making a turn up for the downwind leg ...

 

If by instrument approach, there will depend largely on weather conditions and local topography ... and the air traffic volume at the moment ...

 

Anyway, the total time consumed in a go-around may not exceed 45 minutes, otherwise removes the possibility of landing on the predicted alternative airport.

The flight landed successfully.


 


He was quite high - 2500 feet and not many miles from the threshhold and had slowed considerably presumably to lose height.   Probably about 7 or 800 feet higher than he should be based on other approaches at the same point. second attempt was a real long approach for good measure.
