  1. I know exactly what you mean about warning the wife, Wayne.

I didn't ..... and my wife didn't speak to me for weeks after she got hold of the invoice.

At first, she thought I bought a car,..... then I told her "yeah,...... and it's parked downstairs in the spare room !"

I have decided to wait until FS2024 arrives and hopefully save up for all of those addons I have on my wishlist.

I love everything Orbx offers the flightsim community and will be eager to 're-stock' the brand new sim once it arrives.

A big "thank-you" to Doug Sawatzky of the Orbx team for pointing me in the right direction in speccing this awesome system.

  2. Bye FSX, hello MSFS.....after a brief hiatus, I now have my new system up and running, and looking forward to coming back to the forums.

My only dilemma is whether to jump in with MSFS 2020 this fall, or wait for 2024.  Time will tell ......... 😕

  3. Thank-you, Nick and Jon, for your feedback and advice.

I also found another valuable thread which sheds more light on this topic here:

I will spend more time in the coming few weeks on this and the overall MSFS install setup in W11.

My goal is to get the 'foundation' for the sim sorted out, in order to facilitate the eventual expansion as more addons get added.

I will be in touch if more questions arise once I get the new system up and running.

    Thank-you,

    Milan ....

  4. Current FSX user here, doing some proactive research. I will be switching to MSFS in a few weeks time once my new system is ready for pick-up.

I plan to install both the MSFS launcher app and the larger sim files portion outside of the OS drive, on a second dedicated 2TB SSD drive.  I plan on setting up a custom folder on this drive 'MSFS Addons', organized into sub-folders (Scenery, Aircraft, Mods etc.) for ease of 'looking up' stuff - then linking this custom folder to the Community folder via Addons Linker utility.

Question - I have tons of Orbx scenery for FSX to re-purchase for MSFS as well as plans to add new aircraft/scenery addons from Orbx website. These all get downloaded and installed via Central installer. Where does this installer put these files (file paths) ? I heard something about it setting up a folder called 'msfs' and putting everything there from Orbx site ? I ultimately would like to have the Orbx downloads located in my custom 'MSFS Addons' folder and linked to the Community folder via Addon Linker like my other non-Orbx addons. How can this be done to keep all the addons clean, simple, organized and running well in conjunction with the sim ?

Thank-you, in advance, for your feedback,

    Milan .......

    Hello,

"Although designed from the ground up with NA Southern California in mind, Big Bear will blend quite happily with the all of the Orbx Global range."

means that although it is designed to work best with NA Southern California, it will work well with your Global products, Global Base, Global Vector,

Global Open LC NA and Global Trees HD.

Thank-you, Nick, for your response. I figured that's what they meant.

I just did not want to unnecessarily 'burn through' 120 Orbs and be left with something which I could not make use of without SoCal region installed.

  6. Hello,

I have in my old FSX FTX Global, Vector, Open LC NA, Trees HD, and Jarrad's KPSP Scenery.

I found I had enough Orbs for L35 Big Bear Scenery, but the description seems to have a contradiction in terms - it states :

    1) You require at least one of the following products to use L35 Big Bear City Airport : NA Southern California, and

    2) Although designed from the ground up with NA Southern California in mind, Big Bear will blend quite happily with the all of the Orbx Global range.

Could someone please elaborate on "Big Bear will blend quite happily with all of the Orbx Global range" ? (ie. what is meant by Orbx Global range product-wise ?)

I do not own NA Southern California but do have the KPSP scenery (which L35 apparently works fine with). I would only redeem my Orbs to get L35 if I did not need to buy NA SoCal, but if installing L35 alongside my Global, Vector, Open LC NA, Trees HD, and KPSP would still present any obvious elevation/texture issues - then I would pass on it.

My plans are to move to MSFS soon, and thought this would 'inject' some new life into my old sim in the meantime, at no additional cost.

    Thank-you,

This is a totally unofficial response to your question.  I love L35 Big Bear.  I used it often in FSX, and now in P3Dv5.  It's a beautiful and challenging airport.  But I have SoCal region as well, which makes for a great immersive experience.  Without SoCal region scenery, but with  Open LC NA and the other base scenery you have, I would expect results the same as with KPSP:  full airport, and basic scenery around the airport.  Better than the default, but not as detailed as with the regions.  A possible problem might be with the elevations and the mesh, but with Vector, I don't think that is likely.

I'm an experienced Orbx product user, bit by no means am I an expert.  This is what I would expect in your situation, but I'd like this verified by someone who knows more about it than I do.

Big Bear is a nice little airport with challenging approaches.  the Community help forum has a thread for FSX and FSX steam as well as P3D Xplane MSFS and Aerofly.

    Thank-you, guys for your guidance.

I think I will move this topic to the Community Help Forum (thanks, @Bullfox for pointing me in the right direction) to confirm things.

There's a few YT videos on Orbx prerequisite regions for a certain scenery, with inconclusive results. Most airport scenery usually will blend in well if you have what I have as it covers most of the bases. I don't fly much in SoCal, but figured it would be a nice trip to visit Big Bear while at Jarrad's KPSP, when I fly out from KMRY.

  9. Hi Doug,

I did the full uninstall and reinstall of EDVY and all is good now.

I also found a few more other airports in Central like this (now that I went looking to see if other airports had same issue),  ... did same uninstall/reinstall procedure and those also are now fixed with full Control panel options as well.

    Thank-you, for this advice,

  10. Hello,

    Just a curious question.

I have two airports, both by the same developer,  EDVY and EDBJ.

In the User Manual for both there is a reference to the Config Panel so users can customize the scenery more in line with their system's capabailities. EDBJ has a Control Panel, but EDVY just shows a pop-up labelled 'Control panel' but no options listed to enable/disable parts of the scenery. I have FTX Germany South and have enabled that in the EDBJ panel along with disabling some of the 'grass' areas. I am wondering if EDVY has such options somewhere ? Both airport sceneries are running great, looking great, but when I fly in with a more complex aircraft (Carenado, 4096 textures etc..) I take a bit of fps hit, unless I disable some features through the panel - works in EDBJ; wishing I could do same in EDVY.

(Running FSX SP 1&2 with Orbx Global Base, Vector, OpenLC EU, FTX Germany South). Everything Orbx is up to date through Central V4.1.42.

    Thank-you,

  12.

    Hello,

I currently have FSX with SP1&2. I have FTX Global Base, Vector, and numerous OpenLC regions, full fat regions, Trees HD, and airports - mostly all Orbx. Also running UT2 and REX Essentials. Everything Orbx is up to date - scenery and Orbx Central included.

Some time ago, as is usually the case, I purchased, not one, but numerous sceneries all at same time during your sale (5 to be exact). With real life constantly getting in the way, it was several months before I got around to actually flying and exploring some of these. One I left for a longer while, as I had no suitable aircraft for - namely KBLU. Maybe pure luck, but the few times I started flying in the KBLU region - it was only short flights around Gansner Field. All here was good, so far. I now finally got an AC with appropriate 'gear' and decided to fly out of Limberlost ranch. Upon launching FSX, I found myself sitting in the AC 1/2 buried in the asphalt runway there. OK, then I decided to load up FSX at KBLU, and after a long, agonizing wait (3+min) - got message FSX encountered an error and will need to close (CTD). Second try, after many min. waiting, finally worked, but all small trees/shrubs in the airport vicinity were flickering between white (snow covered) and green. Very annoying, and even after turning 'off' all scenery addons in config panel, no joy. Tried several flights from Gansner to KBLU, and like clockwork, when about 19 to 20 nm out from the KBLU airstrip - got CTD each and every time. Obviously something in the vicinity not right scenery-wise. Event viewer simply points to g3d.dll . I remember getting the exact same CTD's at YBCG and CityScene GC, which were rendered unuseable on my system by Nick, and I got refund.

I followed everything to a T from the KBLU manual, and have no third party scenery in the entire California region. There seem to be little in the way of answers in the forums re this issue. The only airfield of the three which works flawlessly is Gasner Field. I have uninstalled KBLU via Central, and flew several flights out of Gasner to KBLU with different aircraft and without any issues. I feel I have pretty much exhausted my options to make things work, but all of them failed. As opposed to spending more time on this (not enjoyable), I would prefer just to get credit for KBLU (I have all transaction details) and fly in other Orbx areas - all of which work flawlessly.

Here's what I went through with the only other Orbx scenery that had ever given me problems (YBCG) :

Here are a few of the posts (without solutions and in P3D forums, not FSX) I came across :

As you can see, I already spent considerable time on these KBLU sinking plane at CA21, failure to load flight at KBLU, and CTD on KBLU approach issues and have run out of options.

    Hello,

I installed a version of FSX with only SP1 and SP2.

I did manage to load at YBCG once, but it crashed soon afterwards with the out of VAS error message.

My suspicion is that FSX with only SP1 and SP2 will not run the Gold Coast Cityscene and that

you should apply for a refund, quoting this topic.

    Hi Nick,

I did all as you said, and still no answer to my support ticket.       :(

Just for the record you are doing well to run Gold Coast Cityscene with FSX! Last time I tried it I only had autogen out to a few miles.

FSX is still great sim for cross country flights but if you are going to enter built up areas like GC and want detailed scenery, P3DV5 is where you need to be at, even P3DV4 has limited draw distance. The good news is that an i7 4790k and GTX 1080 like mine will run it at 20+ fps, so if you're budget is limited you could pick up a second hand gaming computer with similar specs for under $1000 (assuming you don't already have a similar rig). Almost all the Ants and OZx scenery seems to display quite well.

Finally, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free, I put it off for a long time but the upgrade was seamless and has enough advantages to make it worth doing.

    Hi John,

I am pretty well just trying to make FSX interesting for the time being, on a 12 year old machine. (I have a W10 laptop for everything else and use this desktop just for the sim).  I have never owned any Orbx Australia prior to this point and figured it's time to go out and explore the land down under.

I was planning a totally new sim rig last spring and then the pandemic hit and my 'go to' computer shop had to temporarily close down as per gov't regulations etc.  Now things are finally starting to re-open, but computer hardware inventory is scarce. Was told it will be a waiting game until mid-year for inventory to come back up. Waiting is good as it allows me to do more research in the meantime re my next build.

Thanks, for the feedback. I feel I have gotten good use out of this machine over the past decade, and am looking forward to a new one very soon.
