I’ve benefited from how-to videos by simulator flyers over the years, so I thought it was time to return the favor. This video compares real-world 4k GoPro video footage with video recorded on an X-Plane 11 simulator with Orbx HD scenery.

This was a formation flight on August 3, 2022 from Tacoma Narrows Airport (KTIW) in Gig Harbor, Washington over the Hood Canal with the Olympic Mountains in the background. The flight was recorded in 4K on a wing-mounted GoPro camera on a Citabria flown by a former F-16 pilot. The flight was also recorded in 4K HDR on an iPhone from the rear seat of the Citabria. Following the flight, I recorded the same flight route on X-Plane 11 using Orbx HD scenery for comparison with the real-world footage.

This video demonstrates use of ForeFlight’s recently introduced Hold Advisor feature. The flight is conducted via an IFR simulator utilizing X-Plane 11 and ATC Communications via PilotEdge.

This video includes a real-world landing at Seattle Tacoma international airport at approximately 4:20 AM PDT. Subsequent video was recorded of a flight in X-Plane 11 along the same exact flight path to demonstrate the accuracy of X-Plane 11 with Orbx HD scenery.
